Well last night was the second major crash I had with my 8INXP board. This time it was something that probably had nothing to do with the mobo itself, but unfortunately I had to reload Windows XP and all the drivers again and now it is problematic. I spent about 3 hours last night working out all the kinks, and so I think anyway. Towards the end of it all I started having lock-up issues. I thought everything was set-up and running fine until I went into Age of Empires. About 5 minutes into the game it would lock up, so much so that I have to push the reset on the case. Reboot was fine and windows reported that I had a problem with my Radeon drivers and that caused a fault of some kind. Easy enough, so I reload the CD drivers (which is the most current) and I double checked my settings. I went back into Age Of Empires and the same thing happened. Frustrated now I decided to start changing things so I went into the advanced properties and disabled "Fast writes" which was the only thing I was really able to understand about the card. I set all the OpenGL and 3D settings to default like they were and went into Age of Empires....same thing. AHHHHH. I don't get it because the first time I powered the new system up everything worked like a champ without adjusting any "default settings". Now it seems to want and need me to change settings?? Well, as I was looking throught the 9700 Pro settings I found a place where it said the AGP was running at 2X, now I knew this was wrong but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to change it to 8X anywhere. This lead me to restarting and I went into BIOS. I found the part where I could change the AGP settings and I changed it to 4X instead of auto. This doesn't get me my 8X but it did however fix my problem for the time being anyway. I went into Age Of Empires and played a full length game without one iota of lag or lockup. Before I went to bed I ran a benchmark with 3DMark2001 and it made it through all the tests without a problem either. The score was in the mid 14000 range which is better than it was the first time I ran it when I first built my system up two weeks ago. Then it scored around 13300. I'm not familiar with how this rates on the greater scale so I mainly use the test to see if I can make it through the strenious graphics.
I am at witts end with running into these lock-up and settings issues and would like some tips from someone who can make my system run stable. This is the first system I ever built and all I want out of it is a stable gaming computer I can leave alone and get good performance issues out of. I don't know how to O/C and I don't know what items I should and shouldn't either, but for now I just want to make it stable. With my setup I shouldn't have any over temp problems and I shouldn't have any memory problems either, I tried to make sure of that. Right now I just need to know what frequencies and voltages to run all my components at so I can keep it stable and strong. Any takers? I need some help? Thanks in advance..
