Crashing Issue with new XFX 6600 GT AGP...

Hi guys, im new here. I noticed that there were a few other folks on this board with new 6600 GT AGP cards, as opposed to basically everywhere else so I figured ill try here first...

Im having a bad problem with my new XFX 6600 GT AGP, it crashes after 5-10 minutes of play in any 3d game (Doom 3, Star Wars battlefront, even freebie games). The crash is sudden, and either results in a lockup or a forced restart. The one exception I had was playing Everquest 2 in windowed mode, I was able to play that to a point where I boged down in a city area and it froze (after about an hour of playing, apparently this is more of a "stutter" issue related to the nvidia 6-series cards, as 6800 owners are having this happen in EQ as well). Otherwise, while running the computer in windows and running videos and other situations it is not crashing, just in 3d heavy games. 3dmark even crashes, albiet I was able once to get it to not crash via removing alot of hardware, but after that I tried doom and it still crashed after 10 minutes of play...

So far, ive tried about anything i'm able to try on my own. My system is a Dell Dimension 8300 circa a year ago, P4 2.6ghz, 1gig RAM (512 stock + an extra 512 Kingston RAM chip), a 60 gig hard drive + an extra 80 gig maxtor drive (recently purchased) both 7200rpm drives, Soundlblaster Live! sound card, 56k modem, firewire card, CD-RW drive plus a recently purchased DVD drive, all running on an old 1998 Dell 19" monitor. I did know that the 250w power supply that was on the computer was an issue, but it ran at first until the crash. So I tried a 350w Antec Smartpower, and it still crashed just took more time. Then I tried and still have a 430w Antec Truepower and still have the crashes...

First things first, I already tried removing as much hardware as possible... Both the cd/dvd drives, the firewire card, modem, extra ram, one of the hard drives, and ran it with the case open with a fan on the video card and it still crashed (just took longer) and along with the fact there are no other issues with devices via the process of elimination or using various hardware checking software programs to check for issues with other devices.

I also ran through the last 3 gens of Nvidia drivers (currently using 6.93) which did squat. BIOs is an issue with my Dell however, as I do not have the options at the CMOS menu on startup to disable shadowing and other features that Nvidia recommends shutting off/turning on on their tech support site. And I have ran through all 7 itterations of the Dell Dimension 8300 BIOs updates (A02-A09) with no change.

Ive kept a constant eye on the temps that I am able to keep an eye on. The card stays under 50 degrees Celsius, and the system stays quite cool as well. The fan works fine on the card too (as I mentioned I ran it with the case open for awhile, checked all the fans).

This leads me to believe 2 things, either there IS an issue somewhere with software I dont know about or cant get to (IE the BIOs settings) or the card is bad.

Suggestions/Help?

Thanks :)

Oh, I should probably also mention there has not been any artifacting and the games/programs all run absouletly perfect up intil the sudden crash.

Is the power connector for the 6600GT plugged in? I'm pretty sure all AGP GT's come with an extra power connector (as opposed to the PCI-e versions which don't) and some people forget to plug them in.

If so, you might want to try a different power connector for the 6600GT, or one with fewer devices hooked up to it from the PSU.

Make sure you are up to date on your latest non-beta chipset drivers for the motherboard. Also, did you uninstall the old video card's drivers completely and then run Driver Cleaner? If not, you should do that - download Driver Cleaner, uninstall your old drivers, run drivercleaner to get rid of everything and then reinstall the new Nvidia drivers.

It's bizarre that it took longer to crash when you removed devices; I'd suspect a weak power supply but it seems you already tried some pretty good ones.

I hate to say it because you already have your computer, but Dell is crap. They make good word processors, but not serious gaming rigs.

Try flashing the card's BIOS with the latest reference version from nVidia.

Actually the fan is the loudest fan on my computer right now. Its definatly audible.

My previous card was a nvidia 5200 FX

The power connecter is pluged in. When its not pluged in, it crashes immediatly when opening programs! (I tried that too)

I know my computer is not the best one out there, but other than the motherboard and case its pretty much up to snuff now.

Im going to fiddle around with the driver cleaner now, as XFX responded again to an email (this time WITHOUT just copying and pasting from nvidia) and said to try the 67.03 driver (as aparently the 6600 GT AGP's are having some issues with other drivers, maybe this will help? Ill find out ASAP)

I tried the bios flash on the card too, I have all the most recent (non-beta) drivers, along with older versions as well (right now im back to using the newest bios)

Ok, no change :( Tried the older drivers, and used driver cleaner, and no change... still crashes...

almost sounds like it's drawing just a tad too much power and crashing your PC.

I had the same problem once back in the day, after I upgraded my video card, started getting crashing. after a lot of troubleshooting replaced the power supply and problems were gone. That was back in 2001... the power supply that was too weak is still in use today just FYI so the power supply was not broken, just too weak. :)

do you get better performance with fastwrites and sb addressing both off?

I just grabbed the XFX 6600 GT as well, and I"m having trouble finding drivers that give me optimal performance....

To be frank, my ti4200 ran doom3 almost better than this graphics card (dont know how that's possible)..

any help is appreciated, thnx

As far as I can tell, I dont have a way to disable fastwrites or sb in my bios... Cant even disable shadowing. Its a bare-bones BIOs (darn you dell!!!)

Like ive stated, ive tried 3 different power supplies, and im currently on an antec 430w Truepower and its not the problem.

Hey just read this forum and I have had similar problems as you.............i got the card because I'am playing world of warcraft and wanted better graphics but couldnt afford a new comp.........i realize my comp is old! (P4 1.4ghz,intel motherboard, 512 sd ram) but it was above the specifcation requirements to use the card so i purchased it. Ran fine the first day dont recall any mishaps, after that it would crash on startup of windows and i would just get black screen and would have to restart often times gettin the same result sometimes taking 4-5 restarts! just get into windows. Other times it would crash just trying to open up my game or crash within the game!. Frustrated i called tech support waited almost 1 hour before i got thru and then was told to update bios and motherboard. So I followed instructions did all that and still had the same problems. Now I'm forced to send the card back for a return (I purchased it through tigerdirect.ca) and have to face a restocking fee of 15% if they find the card is not defective. *sigh* can anyone help me?? oh and btw I purchased a 350w power supply just so I can use the card in my system. When i was talking with the sales rep over the phone he said i would get a full refund had it not worked with my system or if i had problems!!! Im so mad now!!

I had the same card which I eventually RMA'd. Mine could never go through a 3dmark03 or 05 test. I thought it was my PSU but, although cutting it close, my psu has been pretty stable on the 12v rail when I monitored it. Then, I tried running the 3dmark programs again with the case open since I noticed it dropped temps on my card about 5 degrees and it worked! Try to monitor the temps on your card with RivaTuner hardware monitor and see what the last temperature was before it locked up.

If your card temps go down when you open the case of your comp, see if you still get lock ups. I RMA'd mine since I shouldn't have to run my computer with the case open to work with the xfx card. My case temps are around 36 to 38 so that shouldn't be the problem.
