crashing at windows startup

i recently fired up a pc thats been sitting for over a year, and it crashes to the error screen, "if this is the first time youre seeing, this you may have a virus etc".

im able to get into bios, and it sees the hd, the processor, the ram. it wont load windows xp though. any ideas? is this a windows issue?

There is actually a more important part to that message. In the example below, see if you can find a file name, as is mention in the below pic:

Also, Windows usually offers to try and find your issue after a failed startup. I would suggest letting it do so, if it is still not starting up for you.

Everything is out of the case, and cables are all tight. Still crashing to same screen. It's not offering to fix anything. It said run chkdsk /f, but how can i do that, if i cant load windows...

OK, your best choice at this point is to boot off the Windows DVD, or try to boot in safe mode. Both will offer you a command prompt to run sfc. From the install DVD you could also let Windows try to find the error (since it is not giving you the prompt otherwise), or just do a repair install.

Safe mode crashes. I'll probably never find that windows dvd, though i'll look. Thanks for your help.

That's not the same screen im seeing though. This has something to do with sitting around for a year in a closet, and not wanting to boot windows for some reason.

That was an example. Many times these are only seen when the auto reboot is unchecked though (it is by default, nice job Microsoft). The nice thing about XP is you can find an ISO just about anywhere on the 'net. You may just need to do a repair install. And if you didn't already know, do the repair from the second prompt, not the first.

Nevermind. Sata Mode was set to AHCI, and needed to be IDE. Booted right up, when switched over. :thumbsup:
