I've got this strange problem with this game that I just can't figure out.
Whenever I ran this game (Need For Speed Underground 2) on my machine the game often crashes back to desktop with no apparent reason. There is no error or any other problem shown. The system also rans ok even after several game crashes. I can still run the game again after it crashes and continues playing from my last save point.
My system is a dual Opteron 240 with 2 GB RAM and X800XL AIW card ... I'm using the Catalyst 5.2 (the reason is the AIW apps just won't work well with 5.5 or anything above 5.3 for that matter). All other games that I have installed on this machine run great without any problem at all ... I've tried running the Sims2 for several minutes without problem, C&C Generals several hours no problem ... I've tried the ATI Tool to "heat up" the video card and it rans perfectly. The temperature of the card according to ATI Tool can reach up to high 70C when running this game, which is pretty much the same as when running the other games (Sims2 and C&C Generals).
I have tried lowering the resolution, lowering the detail but still no problem. The thing is sometimes the game can run for several hours without problem, some other times it won't even go past loading the data.
By the way the machine is otherwise very stable, even under max load on both CPU and graphic. I've used this machine for video editing and video conversion for weeks now without it crashing. This game is pretty much the only program that just won't work properly.
Anyone has any suggestion idea as to what's up?
By the way just a sidenote, I have reinstalled the game several times without any luck on solving this problem. I do however encounter several read errors when reinstalling, but it only occurs randomly and some times there were no read errors at all.
