I've had cable for a few months and comcast just upgraded to 3Mbit down...problem is, I'm not seeing it. Now, I know most sites probably won't reach it... but here's the weirdness:
Directly connected to the cable modem, speed tests show 3.2Mbps and downloads from sites like fileplanet stay at 390-400KB/sec... once I plug into the router, that drops to 1.4Mbps and <170KB/sec at fileplanet and similar sites (gamespot complete). Seems awefully fishy...it's a Network Everywhere NR041 $50 router that's branded linksys but also seems to really just be a netgear sub-company.
A friend a town away confirmed the same exact thing and is what brought up the issue.
Anyone else have any experience with these??? Think the router really is THAT much of a piece of crap that it can't even manage a few megabits properly?
For the hell of it, I updated my firmware from 1.0 release 10 to 1.2 release 3, but it didn't change anything.
Contemplating buying a more expensive router if it will mean smoother browsing speeds and faster downloads. Since the internet gets shared between a few PCs, the router is definitely necessary. No, none of them were active while I did my tests.
