wow this sucks, I just bought another x2 3800 for my brother and im testing it with my setup. im contemplating whether or not I should exchange this for another one at newegg.com or not.Im running the STOCK HSF with AS5.

these are the results, keep in mind im also running 2 instances of prime on both cores to ensure stability

stock voltage - 230fsb - errors after 11 minutes - 45-47C full load
1.37v - 240 - fine, never tested in prime for more then 10 minutes 47-48C full load
1.37v - 245 - errors in 30 secs -47-48C full load
1.39V - good at 245 , errored in 10 minutes when going higher

this to me is a CRAPPY overclock, what should I do? Or is it my stock HSF holding me back? I really doubt that since the temps aren't really that high

i would take out that comment about exchanging it for another one before you get flamed to death.

How did yours do ? What are we comparing it to ? I would go to at least 1.45 v before giving up..

Speaking from a retailer's point of view, I'd agree with this... exchanging a product just because it doesn't OC well is shady at best.

a lot of people are having to go up to 1.52 or so to get 2.5 out of the chip. But a 20% overclock is not crappy, imo. You shouldnt raise voltage too much with the crappy sotck hsf, get a better one.

ok MORE voltage, keep in mind this is following Eclipse's guide and testing methods

1.4v - errors at 247
1.47 - errors at 250
1.52 errors at 255

temps go over 54-58c under full load

this sucks

Im all the way at 1.52 and i cant even do 2.6

I would get the xp-120 but im broke after my 7800GT and i don't even know if the xp-120 will help, it'll help temps but im not too sure about stability

i think I just got unlucky wiht my cpu

Since when is a 27.5% overclock considered "crappy"? I'm usually happy to get 10-15%. Anything above that I consider getting lucky.

your right , but for a x2 3800, ITS CRAPPY
i see reports all over the net of ppl hitting 2.5 on stock cooling with stock voltages
2.6 with 0.1 voltage bumps
its painful to be this unlucky when everybody elses 3800 rocks

oh well i guess its off to ebay, the only reason i bought this cpu was to take it to 2.6 and it cant get there so i lived and learned

Dude! Before you do that,

1. GET OVER YOUR SELF, you sound like a spoiled puppy
2. Get a better cooler, something like a Thermalright SI-120

Are you sure it's not your RAM that's holding you back? Some people swear by their RAM, but then find out that it IS their RAM.

i think he has the manchester core and not toledo. Most toledo's do 2.6 without breaking a sweat. And YES u should check out your ram. Your ram could be whats causing u crash. At 2.8 i kept running into errors til i 5:6 my ram and loosened up a bit on timings. But then again, maybe your ram just straight out sucks so its limiting ur OCing.

its a manchester and I brought my ram wayyy down to 100mhz 1:2 ratio so its definetly not that. The point of this thread was to find out if my 3800 was infact a bad overclocker or if it was just my stock hsf holding me back. no need for the flames.

im just gonna sell it , thanks guys

I had to set my ram at 2T for some reason, even with good ram. 2x 512 meg sticks.

Maybe you should have bought a proven overclocker instead of taken a chance if you wanted a certain speed. BUt, that being said, 2.4 ghz is not bad. Certainly fast enough for alot of people.

Hehe, and what's with the XP-120 idea, get a thermal big typhoon if you're gonna up the HSF, the XP-120's time has passed.

Booooo hooo..

If you can get stable around 2.5ghz or even 2.4ghz you should be thrilled. Especially on the stock HSF.

the Si isnt much better then XP. theres many reports on the SI stating it doesnt live to the reputation as "Replacing the XP". Go WATER!! theres a big difference between 200g waterblock vs 700g hsf :X

Even at stock speeds, the X2 3800+ is awesome.

Mine sucked for OCing too, it only passes P95 @ 2.4 GHz, but guess what. I don't give a flying ****** about P95, etc.

I've been running @ 2.6 since i got it, with zero instability issues of any sort. It's not like i do nothing on it either.
It handles DVD-RB + CCE for all the DVD re-encoding i do with no troubles, & i can play all my games with no issues.

I'm not overly concerned that it doesn't pass P95 @ 2.6 GHz.
P95 isn't a game or something i actually use the PC for :)
