Today I was closing my store (an Auntie Annes pretzel place) for the first time by myself. Manager is gone on vacation, and the current shift leaders couldn't handle it by themselves, so I got a couple of closing shifts. I've been practicing with the manager, and I can pretty much run the store myself with no problems.

Today was my first closing shift, and the register was short $19.38 at the end of the night! I'm not sure what to do, I took $20 from the morning shift till, left a note saying why its $20 short, and maybe we can fix it tomorrow. I counted everything at least 2 times. Most of the stuff, 3-4 times, it was still almst $20 short at the end of the night.

Sucks hardcore! I've been looking for this promotion for a while (been working there a little over a year), I finally get my chance, and the FIRST DAY, the register is down almost $20.

I'm not really sure what I expect in terms of replies, but some advice would be helpful. I just wanted to release a little rant as well.

put in your own 20 bucks, it'd be worth it if you're up for promotion.

unelss the manager took the money himself to see how you'd react.

for every $100 you are allowed $3...so you better hope you made over 700 bucks on that one register :) at least thats how my store works ;)

Is everyone allowed on every till? Or are tills assigned to certain people? It's your first time - someone else prob fvcked up. Don't sweat it

It is always better to be honest. Just make sure that you checked everywhere (including the trash bin, under the table, etc.) for that missing $20 and that you counted the stack of $20s correctly. As long as this doesn't happen every day I think you're fine.

LOL - If he was working here in SF - that could just barely fill a half tank. It cost me $35 to fill up a CAMRY today!

I already know I am "next in line" for a promotion, its just, the spot isn't available. The manager and his wife (she works there too), are on vacation, and I am just a filler/trainee since the other 2 can't possibly close every day and night.

I didn't have any money. I only had .35 cents on me, plus whatever is in the check card. No bills...

Manager couldn't have taken it, he is on vacation.

Morning shift was 65 cents over (pretty good), which is from 10am-4pm, then night shift (my shift) was 4pm-10pm, and it was $19 short. Very strange.... pretty much everyone working (3 of us) was on the register, so it might have been possible we have givin out too much change.

We made $1300 tonight...

I counted everything at least twice (the whole safe, the deposit bag, morning shift, etc), and the night shift till at least 4 times... can't find it.

And so far, its happened everyday! :(

Damn, dude, don't worry about it! If it was exactly $19 short, someone probably accidentally gave out a $20 in place of a $1.

We only had one till open. We have 2 tills total, but it wasn't busy enough to open both.

Morning shift made 500 or so, and nightshift made about 800.

But this is your first day, correct? It's not a big deal!

Thanks for the positive outlook. Hopefully we can figure out a way to fix things tomorrow. I made a temporary fix, I just took $20 out of the safe, and put it in todays deposit. So technically right now, todays deposit is just about right, but the money in the safe is short, so tomorrow I'll discuss it with the people in charge, and see what we can do. . If it was a couple dollars, that'd be no problem... but $20 is huge!

This hasn't been a good week for me, espically in regards to my job. I got into an arguement with another worker the other day, and apparently the person in charge said I was in the wrong. If they all spoke some english, I'm sure I could defend myself correctly :p. I pretty sure I was in the right, and I'd go on about it, but I don't think anyone cares :).

Thanks alot Orsorum, hopefully things work out tomorrow :)

EDIT: And this whole fiasco with the $20 short, and the arguement isn't going to help me out any. Of course the manager is going to ask how well I was doing since he left, since hes been training me for about a month for this whole thing, and it was my first day. All this crap happened when he left, and I don't know how things will work out. I might not even get the promotion, and it might be handed to someone else. Arg...........

Don't take the $20 out!! Seriously. I worked a till for two and a half years in h.s. and closed for two of those, and I can assure you that my bosses were concerned by $20 only if a) we only did $300 of business for the day, or b) well, never. That was the one thing they stressed and I in turn stressed to the people I trained - always be honest, even if it means admitting someone screwed up. Learn from it and move on. They're not going to fire you or demote you for $20.

But they might if they found you altered the deposit.

Well, I left a note saying the till was $20 short and that I took $20 and put it in the bag, and even a note in the till which I took it from, so I am not trying to decieve anyone, just trying to cover my ass because I have no idea what to do! The $20 "transfer" is already done, and nothing I can do about it.

EDIT:

Decieve anyone other than our home office :p.

I would just be honest and not try to move money anywhere.

My mom is a teller at the bank and although she is one of the best at the branch she doesn't always balance correctly. Sometimes she can be as much as $200 short and other times she makes money

The last thing you should have done was remove money from the safe. You should have just left it and let the person that opens count it again. It's possible you missed a couple of rolls of quarters or something. It's better to have a problem in just one place than to have a potential problem in two places. I used to close a fair amount and invariably I forgot to count something so I would end up being short. The opener would find my mistake and correct it.

Wahh Wahhh!! My milk is spilled!

LOL @ the "throw your own $20 in" posts... If one of your employees took it, doing something like that would make it more likely to happen.

I was a store manager at a BK once. Every time I trained a new manager for close I'd either slip in an extra $10 or remove a $20 just to see what they would do when I wasn't around. If they swipe the $10 then do it again, if the second $10 disappears then they weren't worthy. If they slip in their own $20 to replace what I stole or didn't take the $10 then they were generally good employees.

Just my little test when I was working in the Slow Food Industry.

The *best* answer over the long-term is to get the hell out of retail. Other than that, I'd say be honest about what you counted.

I can't believe how stupid you are. You essentially stole money from the safe to cover your own ass.
