My lease ends at April 30th, and they just gave me a notice saying I can move to their "newly upgraded" apts for 300 more a month, or I can move out at the end of the lease..

the deal is they have a lot of empty apts... maybe I can haggle and move into the new apts for the same price I am paying...

key is if you're a good tenant... ever late on rent? noise complaints?

my apt complex was BEGGING me to stay... i think because 1) they're azz expensive.. 2)I was an awesome tenant

I am an excellent tenant, never paid late whatsoever and no complaint from neighbors ever

the problem this is not a person owned apt, its a huge apart complex (hundreds of units)

they are going to change the carpet, add new appliances, and new washer & dryer, then jack up the price by 300.. which is a joke..

a lot of people are moving out.. I guess I now know why..

Then move? What's the problem?

moving is a PITA

Moving is awesome. It's a great opportunity to throw out all the crap you don't need and start fresh. Buy pizza for several of your friends and you can move everything in a day.

moving day is ok, but you have to box ur crap and stuff.. that is a major PITA

then you have to move ur bills, magazine subscriptions, telephone, cable, IRS, etc..

Rent control may be coming to Calabasas
  • The council wants to make sure that both renters and landlords are treated equally. "It?s got to be a fair process," Groveman said.

"We want to be fair to owners and renters."

A renters? bill of rights is probably coming soon, too, he said.

L.A. has both rent control and a renters? rights bill, said Groveman, "just the way they do in Santa Monica and in places like Morro Bay."

Ordinances in those communities protect tenants when a landlord suddenly says, "You?re going to pay for water, you?re going to pay for waste disposal, you?re going to have a rent increase," according to Groveman.
Gotta love Commufornia.

Sounds like a preemptive move by landlords to lock in a higher price before your nanny government clamps down.

wow thanks for the info!! this is really good info..

yeah it seems like they want to jack up the prices before rent control kicks in, and the way to do that is to make "improvements." If they just jack the price up it can raise some eyebrows..

Welcome to the wonderful world of apartment living.

What's happening where you live happened in NYC about 50 years ago. That's where "Rent Controlled Apartments" came from.

There are thousands of apartments in Manhattan...shiitty apartments...roach infested...crack smokin' neighbors, etc, that currently rent for about $800/mo. They COULD be rented for $1,600/mo EASY...but they are rent controlled.

These apartments are so valuable that people will have their relatives move in before they die and get paperwork changed over just so the apt. can stay "in the family."

You think I'm kidding?
