I just built my first system ever. I powered it up, everything looked ok..it said Athlon 1200mhz or something, then it said ram and then numbers..but then after that it did nothing. it went blank...monitor went into power save mode..so I shut it all off, powered it up again, nothing happened. The fans turned and everything sounded like it was working fine, but nothing displayed on the monitor. Did I fry the processor ??? what happened?!!? HELP!!!!!

thanks,
sage

Assuming that you had adequate cooling....

If you don't hear any beeps or anything from your motherboard, it could be your CPU, I suppose, but that doesn't sound right. Else your moniter isn't pluggged in all the way into your video card.

Anyone else have good ideas?

Remove your sound card, modem, nic and reboot as a first step. You need to narrow things down to pinpoint the problem. If you have more then one stick of memory pull all but one out and reboot. Try each stick separately.

All that's plugged in right now is the video card, ram, cpu, ATX connector, and power switch header. I'll try only putting one stick of ram in.

thanks,
sage

oh and about the cooling, I have a PAL6035 with a YS Tech 60mm fan so that is fine..and I used artic silver but I may have done it wrong.

Make sure none of the circuitry on the motherboard is making contact with the case...had that problem once. :p

Also, try removing and reinserting the processor (this may only be relevant with Slot A systems...), and make sure your heatsink is on right. You weren't overclocking were you?

what m/board do you have?
some of the newer m/boards shut down if they don't sense a working cpu fan from the cpu m/board header!

double check the cpu fan is connected to fan header1 (the one next to the memory...check the manual)

It sounds like you ave an unseated component of some sort. Makes sure everything you have installed so far, is placed in their respective slots properly. I had the same problem once, and it was caused by my video card being ever so slightly out of its slot.

uwantasumwang, well i think if you know what you are doing ,building your own is np,for me it was easy as 1,2,3 .i cant ever see blowing money on a prebuilt again,i can service it myself,i dont need a 3 year warranty...he he they sometime go out of business.

I think this may be going directly into "sleep" mode. Try to press the power switch, when it nods off, press the power switch again. (If this doesn't work, try "power" then "Reset." Then get ready to hold down the Del key to get into the BIOS and disable sleep mode.

from my system building experience, i think you fried your processor. it doesnt matter what heatsink you have, if you mounted it improperly it wouldnt adequately cool your cpu. if the new athlon thunderbirds run for more that 12 seconds without a heatsink, they usually destroy themselves. if this describes your problem, this may be the problem.

first thing to do: test your processor in a working system. if it works, be very glad it does and move on to step two.

2) unseat every card (which you already did), remove the motherboard from the case (to make sure you havent grounded the motherboard, unplug everything.

3) reassemble outside the case (on NONMETAL surface like a book) with just mboard, cpu, memory, power supply, and atx case switch (usually come out of the case). you shouldnt need video card at this step (youll be listening for the beeps). if u dont have the momentary switch from the case just short the two power pins to start it.

4) your motherboard should have a power led on the board? mine does but most dont. if it doesnt just power it on and hope u hear the a series of beeps.

if this doesnt work, try replacing components until u find the problem (which is hard if u dont have many components). first make sure you are actually connecting the two pins that are the power pins (u should just short them for about 1/2 a second, then release and allow the circuit to be OPEN. when the power headers are CLOSED it starts the power supply, when they are closed permanently thats BAD. start at your processor, i think this is most likely. then try replacing memory with some know good memory, try using a know good power supply, then trying plugging everything into a different motherboard,

if all this fails (or u dont have access to any components), its time to return to your place of purchase. if this was your first system build, i hope you bought local cause its hard otherwise. most mom&pop shops will be helpful but they arent always.

im sorry uve had such bad luck with your first system build, maybe you can find a knowledgeable friend to help u out with this completion.

if youve destroyed something, dont get upset, i destroyed a motherboard and a processor my first system build, and never completely finished it. the shop i bought it at rebuilt it for me. but the next time i got it right.

good luck

Since it is the kt7 you will have to make sure you have a fan in header #1 closest to mem like was already stated. Also, if it is a delta fan you will have to find something else. I would try some different ram in there. It almost sounds like bad ram or you burnt up your cpu already.
