The cheque idea sounds a little more reasonable, assuming they would agree to it. Do you post something like that in the ad, or just mention it once an interested party contacts you?

I'd probably post something in the ad like "Accept cash, check (you may pickup once the check clears), etc". You'll always get people asking "do you accept check and blah blah", so just tell them you accept check and will only let them pick up the item once the check clears.

Even if it's, say, $2,500 or more?

Cash in any amount is okay. You just need to 1) check that the bills are legit and 2) count the money :p

Ok, I posted a bunch of furniture for sale last night on the list for the first time ever. The only selling I have ever done previously was/is on Anandtech FS/FT, which is a lot easier to deal with since you can look at their posting history, check Heatware, talk with other members about dealing with the person, etc.

Anyway, I received this inquiry a few minutes ago (one line, that is all he sent):

quote:
Hi I was wondering if they are still available and if I could come get them

So my questions are as follows:

1. Easiest way to tell a scam inquiry (i.e. someone offers their Nigerian crown jewels for my Xbox; but I'm looking for more subtle scam indicators)

2. Does the above inquiry sound like a scam at all?

3. If it does not seem like a scam, what is the best way to respond to these guys?

Sorry for the ridiculously noobish questions, but I just want to make sure I deal with this properly.

Thanks in advance to everyone for the help!

Cheers,
KT

seems fine, as simple as it is. ask for phone number so you can set up a time. Judge them based on conversation ftw!

that's what I do, anyway. I always ignore blatantly god-awful grammar issues.

also expect at least 60-70% of the people to flake out. happens all the time on CL. everyone is asking about tons of similar items at the same time, so your items will often be confused with others.

Worked out great, but not in that way, since I was still married at the time and the wife wasn't down for the threesome. :(

Yes, CASH ONLY.

Bought motorcycle - $4200 CASH

Sold motorcycle - $4300 CASH

Bought another motorcycle - $7000 CASH

No one argues when you bring cash.

Also, it's not impolite to count money in front of one another; it prevents future possibilities of misunderstanding.

For example, if you sell something large (say a big TV and some other things) do you get them to pay cash? It seems strange to ask someone to bring, potentially, thousands of dollars in cash.

Anyone have experience with this type of thing?

Thanks.

Wow, ok, didn't think that much cash would be kosher.

When I bought a car at CL, the seller requires bank check, and on the date of the sales, he made sure I went with him to the bank and the check is deposited before giving me the key.

That sounds reasonable. There is a bulletin board at my condo, so I will probably post it there first (just thought of it this morning on the way out) but if that does not work out, I will post it on CL with those requirements. Thanks.
