Virtuamike, both the Sierra Nevada and the Chimay sound promising.
chimay has some rather good beer...i buy it in the 750 (or 650?) instead of the singles as its a little cheaper that way.

ommengang abbey from new york also has some good belgian style beer. the abbey ale is nice. i still need to try their "three philosophers"

1) Rogue Hazelnut
2) Blackstone St. Charles Porter
3) Samuel Smith Taddy Porter/Nut Brown
4) Left Hand Sawtooth/Milk Stout
5) I have a soft spot for any Oktoberfest I can get my hands on

To be honest this isn't much of a ranking. I love all beer other than really hoppy stuff.

I'm absolutely obsessed with Belgian or Belgian-Style pales and goldens. 8-10% ABV, absolutely intoxicating aromas and smoooooooooth all the way down.

recent consumptions:

anderson valley oatmeal stout
north coast pranQster and old rasputin stout
rogue dead guy

ive also had a good portion of whats been mentioned here and almost everything is good 🙂

Very much this. aside from the price theres really no downside. the buzzes are very energetic and make for perfect daytime drinking. 🙂

La Fin Du Monde and Guldendraak are two of my favorites.

Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA
Green Flash Imperial IPA
Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale
Stone Ruination IPA
The Lost Abbey Lost and Found Ale

Have you been to the Sacramento Total Wine & More?

i have not, but only because its completely on the other side of the city. even the guy at the store where i buy a lot of my beer suggested it. i fear the amount of cash i may spend when i do eventually make it there.

it gets me angry when I can't find anything I want to try at any of the local places. I've pretty much given up trying new stuff. 9 times out of 10 I'm gonna buy Sierra Nevada, and most of the time, the Pale Ale.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for most of these, but I doubt a lot of the Northeast ones will make it to the Southwest. I could be surprised, though. Dogfish head makes it down here and Stone Brewery makes it to Boston bars.

Are Rogue and Green Flash worth the money? And Anxi, you are lucky to live in SD as a beer fan. Have you ever been to the Stone Brewery?

theres a total wine in raleigh....good christ what a wonderful place. the first time i went there was with a friend, and as we stared down the beer aisle (and its a huge aisle) i said "brian, if i die...i want to be cremated, and i want you to take a picture of the urn here on the shelves with the good beer and post it to facebook, tag me in it"

1: Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter
2: Bell's Two-Hearted Ale
3: Rogue Mocha Porter
4: Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA
5: Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA

I'm an ale guy sorta

1: Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter

3: Rogue Mocha Porter

was soooooo disappointed in the Gonzo. something about a porter w/ fake citrus flavor added (or at least it tasted that way) just didnt jive with me.

lovelovelove the rogue mocha porter. speakeasy (from SF) makes a great porter too.

I just recently had a Founder's Breakfast Stout for the first time and I loved it. I'm a fan of stouts in general, but this one blew the others out of the water.

I was talking about this not 5 minutes ago with my lab mates. It appears that such is unavailable to us here in the bay area? 🙁

Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA
Green Flash Imperial IPA
Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale
Stone Ruination IPA
The Lost Abbey Lost and Found Ale

the first time I tried Racer 5 (draught) I was unimpressed. I like it a little more now...but what is really awesome from bear Republic is their Hop Rod Rye ale, currently available (seasonal, I think).

that stuff is like candy. yum.

Ugh, this thread is making me thirsty. I need to make a run to some of the local craft beer shops soon.

Nah, not overhyped. Pricey but good. Dark fruit and sweet malt. Don't drink it too cold, otherwise you won't get all the complexity.

yeah, Chimay isn't overhyped at all, but it's the most widely available good belgian beer out there. There is much, much better, for not too much more, but you have to search. Westmalle tends to be somewhat easy to find, and I prefer their stuff to Chimay.

Probably my favorite that I have tried is the Konigshoeven Quadrupel. 10%, and on tap at the greatest fucking restaurant in the world:

😀

the Sierra Nevada pale ale is a classic. Always a good choice when there's nothing else. They currently have a brown ale out--Tumbler--which is awesome. It used to be only available at the pub here on campus (Cal), where it is known as Brown Bear Ale. Awesome stuff. Get it while available.

Their Southern Hemisphere and Wet Hop harvest Ales that they've been running for ~2 years now are excellent as well.

the lab is heading to a nearby pub in ~2 hours to celebrate the end of our heat wave. Decent selection, where a pint of Arrogant Bastard is ....FOUR DOLLA! They have a 2 hour happy hour every day where every pint is TREE DOLLA!
:awe::awe:

The Gonzo had a more pleasant finish than the Rogue to me; that was the deciding factor.

i totally forgot to mention in here that i borrowed homebrew equipment from my cousin and intend to start homebrewing in the next couple of weeks... 😀
