Not my thing either, was looking at sonic boom videos, then find one where at the end the lady said whip cracking is actually a sonic boom, and it led me to that.

Yep. The crack noise is from the tip traveling at super sonic speed. Just as the snap you hear from a tiny spark is no different than lightning - just on a minute scale.
