CR2016 equivalent to CR2025?

Muse

Lifer
I ordered five CR2025 batteries on ebay for my Canon Optura 20 camcorder, whose CR2025 backup battery died.

Ebay auction page

I got a letter in the mail with 5 CR2016 cells, not the 5 CR2025 cells I expected. Unless I'm mistaken, these cells have rather different specifications. Even the seller's page doesn't indicate that CR2016 are a replacement for the CR2025 cells. Should I complain to the seller and demand a replacement? The manual for the camcorder says to use only certain manufacturer's CR2025 (including Maxell, which is what the listing specifies) and that "use of other batteries may present a risk of fire or explosion." What would you do?

They're compatible. Compatible being the key word. CR2025 holds a higher charge than CR2016. 170mAh Vs. 90mAh. So while they both work, CR2025 lasts longer.

Actually, I take it back, CR2016 is not compatible 'cause it's thinner than CR2025. Contact the seller and demand a refund.

Found something on Google that said the CR2016 have half the capacity of CR2025. That's why the CR2025 are thicker. I would not accept the deal.

I just sent the seller this message via Ask the seller a question from the listing page at ebay:

The cells you sent me are not the ones specified in the listing, which are Maxell CR2025. You sent me Maxell CR2016. Even your listing does not assert that CR2016 cells can replace CR2025. My camcorder manual specifically specifies Maxell (and a few other manufacturers') CR2025 and says that "use of other batteries may present a risk of fire or explosion." Please arrange to provide me with the specified auction item.

Yes, I found a thread at Candlepower Forums where a guy said that the CR2025 is 170 mah and the CR2016 80 mah.

Funny thing is the item is $0.99, the shipping costs $2.50. He sent me a letter with $0.58 worth of stamps. I want more than $.99 back, I want the specified CR2025's. What should I do?

Get him to send you the actual item and forget about it - next time just go to WalMart or something.

Get them from someone else. This guy is a crook, and you should make sure to leave him negative feedback.

not much you can do other then get a refund. you really can't force him to ship it.

even though he should. maybe he just made a mistake and sent the wrong item.

For the LAST TIME...shipping costs on ebay have nothing to due with POSTAGE.

Stick to freaking WALMART!

Yup, that seems to be the case. He responded to my email this morning:

*sorry for the mistake. i will send you the correct item CR2025 ASAP. regards.*

Of course, I have to wonder if it was really a mistake or he thought I'd accept the cheaper substitute, which may have worked for me although the batteries have roughly half the capacity.

Yeah, I figured that B&M I'm going to pay more even with ebay shipping. 5 for $3.50 looks like a good deal. The first one lasted me around 3 years in the camera, although the manual says maybe a year, maybe more (?). I'll keep the spares in the fridge and shouldn't need more for over a decade, assuming I'm still using the camera...

No, the stamps I referred to was the cost of the seller's postage, plus the envelope. I said that just to indicate how much he actually spend sending the thing in terms of monetary cost. The shipping fee was $2.50, the stamps cost him $0.58.

Normally, I'd say semantics can come into play over a model number if they do the exact same thing. However, here, the model number itself describes the difference.

2025: 20mm diameter, 2.5mm thickness
2016: 20mm diameter, 1.6mm thickness

Even at $1.50, 5 of them would cost me $7.50 + tax + the time and cost of going to Fry's. This was not even half the cost. Normally, I get what I expect at ebay, but there are exceptions. Anyway, the guy said he is sending me the right ones. I guess I can turn around and sell the CR2016's on ebay! He didn't ask me to return them.
