mobo is a gigabyte EP35-DS3L

No matter what I change the FSB to it doesnt change the speed in cpuz. It stays at exactly 1.8ghz no matter what.

Can someone help me please? Thank you

Also, when using this new version, if I sit there and watch the cpu speed, it flips between 1800mhz and 1200mhz every few seconds.

Thanks

Did you happen to read this? It will explain some things you are wondering about. Give more details about your girlfriends rig and I am sure help will be plentiful.:)

Yeah it's just the Intel power saving features that turn down the multiplier among other things, in order to save power and lower heat I would imagine, unless of course it's on full load like when running Prime or something and then it ramps everything up.

I looked through those links, but they seem to be for laptops. I haven't seen any of those sleep states in bios OR power management options. I don't understand how to use any of that information for this problem.

Here's her build:

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel
Intel Pentium E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000)
MSI N9600GT 512M OC GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3

Thanks for the help thus far

If you go into the Advanced bios feature section, there are 3 settings that have to do with what you are wondering about. The (3) are called (1) CPU Enhanced Hault (C1E). (2) CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2). (3) CPU EIST Function.
After you save and reboot, does the pc shut down for a sec and then boot? Or just Boot up? If it just boots up then it is not saved and it will refer back to stock settings or the last setting that was saved. If it shuts down and then boots, it should boot to the settings you have saved. Cmos may have to be reset if you have problems with this easy process.:)

Ok I got you. I went into bios and disabled all of those options, but I still have the same problem. I noticed that when I "Enable" cpu host frequency control (fsb) and set it to 333 9x mult it says in the bios I should be getting 3ghz, but when I run cpuz I'm only getting 1.8. When I go back into bios to check everything, "cpu host control frequency" is disabled again (and I am definitely saving the changes).

Any ideas?

Are you trying to set the FSB @ 333 right off the bat? If you are, are you adjusting cpu voltage to accommodate the higher FSB? I am thinking that if you are doing so, what is happening is that it wont boot @ those settings and is reverting back to stock settings @ boot up.

You will probably need to up the vcore for 333

And make sure your ram is at or below stock speed

I've read about 1,000 posts thats that say the E2160 can hit 3.0ghz on stock voltage - But yes I did up the voltage from 1.32 to 1.35.

And it doesn't not boot and reboot itself without me asking. It simply shuts that damn FSB control enable option off every time...

The ram's at stock speed.

This is extremely frustrating...

Yes I know the E2160 can hit those marks because I have 1 and I got it up to 3.2. But as for "stock voltage", well not every chip is alike? So, try to do a small setting and see what happens. That's if you haven't done it already. Set the FSB to an acceptable setting like 33mhz above stock and see what happens. Your chip may require more voltage than what you may expect. Like I said, not all chips are alike. I know it can be frustrating but as I know from the "OC world", it takes understanding, patience, and luck. Right now, you need patience............:)

Edit: just an FYI, that last screeny you took of cpu-z is 1.38 version. Are you sure you have version 1.45?

I've never seen an E2xxx chip that will do 3.0Ghz on stock voltage. 2.85Ghz, sure. But not 3.0Ghz.
