I am getting my ASRock board replaced (finally) and it has a Z87 chipset so I kinda debating on buying a new board because I don't have a K cpu.

Should I use the board without a K cpu or wait?

Everything I read on z87 boards is, they are made for overclocking.

Just ready to finish my build and this is where I am stuck at.

You are done talking about your motherboard. If you have further technical questions that's fine, but I don't want to hear another thing about your motherboard being RMA'd or replaced. So find a way to ask those questions without inevitably bringing up your little adventure. It's a giant distraction at this point.

Yeah they decided I broke the board so the sent the defective back so I have to send it to the manufacture now for my ASRock back.

So I am kinda debating do I want to use the ASRock board when I can get a 4670k or just put a 4670 in it even though z87 is made for overclocking.

I am looking at some h87 boards right now but I can't decide what to do. If I get a new board I can start building Friday but if I wait to get my ASRock back it could be 2+ weeks.

I hate making choices.

But I'm guessing that you bought from Newegg. It was DOA. You send it to them, but they said you broke it. Now you sent it to ASRock where it is being processed?

I get it Friday and then I have to send it to ASRock...

ASRock said it will take 2+ weeks to get me a new board and Newegg has already had it for 3 weeks...So I am looking at almost 6 weeks without a board.

I asked about it and they said it was psychically damaged and sent back to me.

A non-K CPU will work totally fine in a Z87 board. It won't be able to overclock of course, but otherwise it would work the same as it would in a B85 or H87 board.

I found a lot of videos though so I figured out what I did wrong if the board is really physically damaged like they say.

You're not _required_ to overclock the CPU on a Z87 board. Right now, worry about getting the thing running first. Unless that CPU is virgin in an unopened box, I wouldn't be replacing it now. If you want to overclock in the future, sell it and replace it then.

Given all the issues you've had, selling that CPU to someone now, before installing it and thoroughly testing it, would be a little sketchy.

I got a brand new CPU from newegg.

I haven't even opened it yet.

Just waiting on this board to get back to me so I can send it to ASRock and pay money out that I don't have...

That's kinda also where I am at too, if ASRock is going to charge me the same as buying a board from Newegg then I will have to get a board from newegg...I don't have out of pocket money right now...

Well, I'm going to assume that you either cannot return that CPU to Newegg at this point in time, or that you're not brash enough to request a return with no restocking fee.

So, if you want a K processor you can sell that CPU at a loss of maybe $25-30 if you're really lucky. Then buy a K processor. In the end you'll have purchased a processor that you didn't originally want and you'll have paid an extra $25 or more for it.
