Earlier this week, Intel introduced Core i7 high-end processors for socket 2011-3 platform, and we suspect that their workstation counterparts from E5-1600 v4 series will be launched really soon. The E5-1600 v4 microprocessors are similar to previously launched E5-2600 v4 series, however they do not have as many cores and do not support dual-processing. Details of individual E5-1600 v4 models were published by 4 different sources, including Intel's Specification update for E5-2600 v4 series, Fujitsu CELSIUS M740 datasheet (PDF file), along with ASRock and ASUS CPU support lists. We compiled together specifications from all 4 sources, and presented them further below. All in all, the sources list 7 models: E5-1603 v4, E5-1607 v4, E5-1620 v4, E5-1630 v4, E5-1650 v4, E5-1660 v4 and E5-1680 v4.

Xeon E5-1603 v4 and E5-1607 v4 are quad-core entry-level models without Hyper-Threading technology. They are clocked at 2.8 GHz and 3.1 GHz respectively. They have 10 MB L3 cache and support DDR4-2133 memory.

Xeon E5-1620 v4 and E5-1630 v4 also have 4 CPU cores, and add support for Hyper-Threading and DDR4-2400 memory. The Intel specification update shows 3.8 GHz frequency for both models, which could be incorrect. Other sources show 3.5 GHz and 3.7 GHz clock rates.

Xeon E5-1650 v4 is the only 6-core microprocessor in the E5-1600 v4 lineup. It integrates 15 MB of level 3 cache, and operates at 3.6 GHz, or at 3.8 GHz per the specification update.

Xeon E5-1660 v4 and E5-1680 v4 come with 8 cores and 20 MB cache. Some sources state that the processors are clocked at 3.2 GHz or 3.4 GHz, while other sources mention 3.6 GHz and 3.8 GHz frequencies.

All Xeons are rated at 140 Watt TDP. A summary of specifications is provided below. For comparison purposes, we also included specifications of recently released Core i7 CPUs. The second number in the frequency column is taken from the Intel specification update. New CPUs are in bold:

That's some extremely lazy TDP setting for the 4 core parts.

If the pricing is right, the 1620 v4 looks like a decent high-end quad core alternative, if you happen to need additional PCIe lanes from the CPU.
