Cpu usage at 100% when no apps running

Hey. I am having a tad bit of trouble. I turn on my computer and when I launch a program (Wether it be a game or music), the computer laggs, you can tell by the bursts of static when audio is playing, or plainly looking at a video or playing a game, you can see things to lock up in correspondance with the music lagging up.

I have 30 processes running (Under Task Manager). I also ran a Spybot S&D, Adaware, and Norton full system scans and nothing came up (All are up to date). Programs that are currently running:

Link (Put it as an image instead of typing everything).

I'd like to be able to watch movies/listen to music without having to deal with this slowness. I don't know what could be wrong. Thanks a lot !

Your image shows no CPU utilization.

A screenshot of your running processes is pretty much worthless. Most modern spyware hides the running process.

Of more use would be a HijackThis! log.

If you indeed have high CPU utilization then it's probably spyware. I wouldn't trust Spybot or Adaware anymore - they've been off my radar for almost a year. Follow the my detailed instructions here for spyware cleaning: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Just by reading the title I can tellm it is most likely spyware. Read the link posted by FlyingPenguin

the things in your task manager processes that i see taking up your cpu that are abnormal are:

mspaint.exe (do you have paint open?)

iexplore.exe (did you have internet open during this?)

win.exe (not normal, most likely virus or spyware)

stylexp (those themes eat up resources, try going commando and uninstall them)

UAservice7.exe (i have no clue what this is)

I think it worked. Thanks a lot FlyingPenguin. Still a little choppy, but found one error in one of the scans CWMSconfig or something. System recources are only using about 0-4% now. But the music's still a little choppy. Might be the media player, I'll give it a test and check up on here by tomarrow. Laterz

Problem solved!

One problem remains: When at start-up the loading bar takes up to 2-4 minutes to fully load and then transgress into the desktop. Any ideas? Could it be that 'Style XP' or my Auston Desktop Manager? Those will be deleted shortly. If there is another problem that contributes to slow start-up, please lemme know. Thanks a lot!

Try defragging. Or run Ccleaner.

CWSMSconfig - a variant of CoolWebSearch, a horrid bit of spyware, may its authors rot in hell. CWSMSconfig is easy to get rid of - CWShredder kills it right away. But some other variants will crash CWShredder, requiring manual removal, which can be extremely difficult. Some strains use hidden registry entries that instruct Explorer to render CoolWebSearch's EXE and DLL files completely invisible to normal searches. And you can't just search for a specific filename anyway - they're randomly generated, making them even harder to find. I'd like to find the coders of CWS and randomly rearrange their component molecules.

That was deleted using that CWShredder. aGreenAgent's suggestion of defrag was a good idea, and Ccleaner ran a check. It still takes 3-4 minutes to start. Even the start-up music piano thing lags with sound. When looking at a timer in an media player, it goes slower than a real clock because of the lag. I have almost 120GB of information stored on my drives and if I have to restore I need to back all that up.. Wish Blu-Ray was here heh. Can I copy games onto DVD and somehow copy my registry so I can just make a quick switch when restoring? So I can just make a few DVDs with data on them, and just copy and paste them back into my newly restored computer. I really don't want to restore, but its turning into a situation where I have no choice.

I do take my computer to a gaming center every weekend. What are the chances something is loose inside the hardware? I don't know, I'd like to explore all options before deleting everything

Have you run MS's Antispyware on the machine?
Does Device Manager look "clean" with no issues or other ! or NOT symbols?
Is the machine slow like that in safe mode? (May be hard to tell, as safe mode slows a lot down too.)
How much free HDD space do you have?
If you try another sound card do the issues remain?
In Task Manager's performance tab, what are the Physical Memory Total/Available/SystemCache numbers, roughly?
What are the Commit Charge Total Limit Peak numbers, roughly?

Well, if you reinstall Windows XP, you'll probably want to reinstall your programs, but your data (say, MP3s, MPGs, etc.) won't need to be touched - just don't reformat the C: drive and you'll be fine.

Oh - and another suggestion - pop the hard drive (C out, take it to another computer, attach it as a slave drive, and run MS Antispyware scans against the drive to see what it picks up.

1. MS Anti-Spyware has been run and I do have that.
2. Device manager is 'clean'
3. I have yet to try safe mode.
4. 25GB left on my C Drive. 40+ on my D Drive
5. I have onboard sound. Should I invest in a soundcard-at what cost?

Had the computer over 6 months now. No problems thus far up until this point.

1. OK, and it is constantly running?
2. Good.
3. Try it; let us know.
4. Good.
5. Just turn off sound then (in the BIOS) and see if anything changes.
6 & 7 - Looks good; no RAM issues.

Look in the event log and tell us what you see - do you have any errors in the System event log? Anything hard-disk related?
