I know this is a topic that has been covered all over the web and believe me I have done searches and tried to find the answer to my problem but the more I look the more confused I get as everyone has a differnt reason for my delimna.

My CPU usage goes to 100% all the time when I play games, COD2 is the game I play the most. It also goes to 100% when surfing the net. I have run virus scans and adware programs online and off and have no viruses or adware etc.....and have removed what was found.

Is their a reason for this that I am missing? One of the other forums I found told me to run a scan at mypcscan.com so I did. I have attached the link for the results. I noticed a lot of RED areas but they all look like Greek to me. Can someone read my results and tell me if they see a problem that might be causing this?

i had a similar problem but not during games. it'd go up to 100% if i opened my computer and tried to open this media file i downloaded (task manager said "explorer" was using up 50% cpu) so i booted into safe mode and delted the file and it works now

for gaming you routinely go into 100% usage....cod2 is a pretty demanding game so 100% on it i would say is normal.

for surfing the net does it stay at 100%? or just now and then? also what are you monitoring the cpu with?

throttling is if you have cool 'n quiet on - basically the cpu will slow down to cut down on power usage and heat output if it can, say it will go down to a 5x multiplier, then as it needs more cpu power the multipliers will go up, so you might be at 100% of a lowered multiplier setting or are you at 100% at the whole 3800 speed?

like in my sig i use rm cpu clock - and as you can see it goes through quite a range of frequencies - it may only be @ 1.25GHz for a second and the cpu will spike to 100%, then back down. if you see it is @ 100%, right click on "my computer" go to properties and see what it shows for the cpu speed.

Try disabling cool n' quiet (in the BIOS) then look at CPU usage in the things that cause it to go to 100%.
No harm will be done by disabling cool n' quiet (the power consumption will go up a little.)

Hi Veraxitas,

You seem to have a problem with a process called XFire.exe.
It consumes a lot of CPU time and it does a lot of I/O (network/disk read write operations).

File name Description Vendor Memory usage Page File Usage Total Page Faults Total CPU Time Total CPU Time
Spent in User Mode Total CPU Time Spent in
Kernel Mode Number of Threads Number of
Open Handles Total Bytes Read Total Bytes Written
Xfire.exe Xfire Xfire Inc. 16244 Kb 20104 Kb 689100 192.969 Sec 69.984 Sec 122.984 Sec 10 806 59687533 b 25157129 b

This process belongs to software called XFire (http://www.xfire.com/) it can also be a Trojan or Virus disguised as XFire.

I would recommend that you uninstall XFire or disable it and see if this solves the problem.

Good luck

One more thing?

Once you uninstalled/disabled XFire, if you still experience problems.
Run the programs that cause problems a couple of times(let them run for a few minutes) and then go to http://www.mypccenter.com/ again, run the full PC scan and post your scan results again so I can see if there is another issue that needs to be addressed?

Thank you all for all of the suggestions and help. I finally figured out what the problem was though. It was that dang Microsoft Net Framework 2.0. Yep, the way I isolated it is after trying everything and determining I didn't have a virus or trojan, I decided to reformat and start from scratch. This time I decided to install COD2 BEFORE doing any windows updates. This time when I ran it the CPU usgae only went to 20-45%. I then installed the windows updates (critical) and still only 20-45%. So, then I installed the software updates, Net Framework being one of them, and BAM, 100% CPU usage.

Therefore, I sold my ATI card and got and Nvidia, becasue ATI Cats require Microsoft Net Framework to work and Nvidia drivers dont. May not be that big of a deal, but I dont like the 100% usage and the ATI card required me to install the one thing that was causing the problem so I got rid of it and now no more 100%.

I have an ATI card, MS .NET framework, and my CPU usage is at 100% - but ONLY because I have F@H running ;) If I shut that off it drops to a couple percent here and there (varies) as I browse the web.

I agree, its some app - perhaps the ATI stuff other than drivers themselves or something associated with it that NEEDS frame net API to run. Something non-compliant.
Like all current autodesk apps need frame net installed to run

That xfire thing is an online player monitoring sw

any game should use 100% on a single core, use the task manager to see wich process is hogging the CPU. while the cool-n-quiet explanation may be true"throttling" is really whe a cpu over heats and shuts down to cool off it happens very rapidly(to keep it from melting) usually only P4's do it. if you not at 100% all the time your OK likely.
100% is this on a dual core? where are you seeing 100%?

i too would like to see where you are getting your % amounts. can you take a screen shot and so we can see it? this is what my p4 looked like when gaming with bf2 - have a look

All I know is when I was using the ATI drivers with net framework installed I got 100% CPU usage when playing COD2. When I switched to the Nvidia and didnt use the net framwork, my CPU usage only goes to a high of 50% in the same game now.

i understand that, but what are you using to see the cpu usage? dual monitors? some type of performance graph? or is when you exit the game?

I alt-tab out of the game so its still running but I can see my desktop then I crt-alt-delete to bring up the task manager.

in an AT home page review, it does actually seem to be a prob, that is Win XP/DirX and ATI frame.net written drivers and perhaps the control panel (or whatever ATI calls it)

There are also some other areas that give us cause for concern, though these are not necessarily ABS's fault. First, Core 2 Duo/Extreme systems do not seem to be fully optimized when running ATI graphics solutions. Performance is good, but our testing with NVIDIA SLI and Core 2 Extreme indicates that ATI cards currently don't perform as well as they could on the platform. Another ATI issue that was much more pronounced on the ABS Ultimate X9 is the slow startup time associated with loading the ATI drivers and the .Net framework; once the Windows desktop appears, there is another ~30 second delay before the ATI drivers are fully loaded and the system becomes useable. (This delay is much longer than what we have encountered on RD580 CrossFire platforms and is far more noticeable, despite the fact that in other areas the ABS X9 is clearly faster.) If you don't plan on rebooting your system very often, it may not be a big deal, but it did become a little irritating during testing. Finally, the issues we encountered when first trying to run Oblivion solidify our feeling that the ATI CrossFire and Core 2 combination is still immature. We expect all of the issues to be ironed out in the future, but the future also holds faster GPUs, processors, and new motherboards.
