The CPU you chose is good.

Don't get a VIA-chipset Athlon 64 motherboard. Get a NVIDIA-chipset motherboard. NForce 4 based, to be more precise.

And you need AT LEAST PC3200 memory, not PC2100.

Is that a single stick of 1GB memory, or two 512MB sticks? You want to make sure and buy a pair of memory sticks to run dual-channel.

That motherboard is a good one.

Peyton has hit the NAIL on the head; bog down your system with PC2100 RAM ??? No way !!! Instead bo for a great value and excellent memory like this popular Corsair ValueSelect 1 GB (2 X 512MB) PC-3200 .

By a board with a buggie VIA chipset ??? No Way. But if you HAVE to have a VIA chipset-based board at least go for their most recent chipset, the K8T890 chipset in a board like this well-respected Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 motherboard.

It's much better for you to go with an nVidia nForce 4 board like this Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 that uses the "Ultra" version of the nForce 4 chip or the Asus A8N "series" like the A8N-E or any of the SLI versions of the Asus boards like this Asus A8N - SLI board.

Would i need anything else? A fan etc

Sorry for the noob questions, I'm an upgrade virgin!

See my post below; go with an nForce FOUR board and 2 x 512 MB ( 2 DIMMs ) so you can run in DUAL CHANNEL Mode !!!

Thanks. I'm sure that the nForce 4 is better but its starting to add too much to the cost. Unless there is a real reason not to I'll think I'll reluctantly stick with the nForce 3 :(

Thanks for the suggestion re the RAM, I'll defintely follow that one up.

Ok this is what i would recommend:

CPU

AMD 3700+ San Diego, over the 3500+ Winchester/Venice <--(which ever one you intended to get)

The Winchester version of the 3500+ was the first AMD revison to be based on the 90nm process, the new revison is the 3500+ venice , and these are both clocked at 2.2Ghz with 512Kb L2 cache except the the venice has the new SSE3 instruction set which make it perform better than the Winchester.

The 3700+ is the latest and greatest version on the REV-E 90nm process and is the same as the 3500+ venice but has 1Mb L2 cache and also has SSE3 built in instruction set, and this is what i recommend, i recommend this because it also runs at 2.2Ghz but has 1Mb L2 cache, and is better at gaming and most apps than the 3800+ venice which is the more expensive venice which runs at 2.4Ghz with 512Kb L2 cache..

Summary: AMD 3700+ is in the same price range as the 3500+ but well worth its money and brings good performance, the next step up is the 4000+ San Diego and the FX55/FX57 (which are also based on the San Diego Core, and not the old Clawhammer 130nm process for the old FX55) so as you can see for the price the 3700+ is just a lower clocked FX55-(@2.6Ghz) FX57-(@2.8Ghz) .. now his the fun part with my lower recommendations on motherboard you will have the opertunity to Overclock this Chip to 2.6/2.8Ghz with ease and will end up saving your self a heleva lot of money ;) .. or you can just keep it standard .. and it will still perform excellent.. :)

Motherboard

Now i recommend for motherboard either:

AGP based on the Nforce 3 Chipset as this is the best chipset for s939 AGP motherboards !

SUPPORTS AGP GRAPHICS CARDS

Msi K8n Neo2 Platinum s939

*NEW* DFI Lan party s939 (AGP version)

I can vouch for the MSI K8N Neo2 platinum as i have it and i find that it is very compatibile, very solid good Overclocker Motherboard, and also has the BIOS support is also very good.

I have to say that with the DFI reputation that their Motherboard will be an Excellent platform aswell but have noe experience with it...

PCI-e based on the Nforce 4 chipset for s939,

SUPPORTS PCI-e GRAPHICS CARDS

DFI: SLI-DR

MSI: NEO-F

ASUS: A8N SLI

Any of these motherboards are excellent for stability comptaibility and also solid platforms for Overclocking, they also offer a good upgrade path if you intend to purchase another Graphics card you can just use it in SLI with the current Graphics card, and improve you Graphics performance

Memory

Now with memory i would recommend any memory with a CAS 2.5 Rating and from a reputable manufacturer like OCZ, Kingstone Corsair Crucial, and please dont buy PC2700 RAM for few extra £'s or $'s you can get PC3200 RAM which is what you should be running on any new platform anyway, and the perfomance loss you will receive using PC2700 over PC3200 ..well .. i wont even go into ..

So summary: PC3200 @ CAS 2.5-3-3-x .. form a reputable company..

hope this helps ... :)
