CPU upgrade worth it?

I have an E6750 in my Gigabyte P35-DS3L right now. As I am STILL having OC issues with this board, I want to upgrade my CPU to an E8500. Will it be that better of an improvement over the 6750, or should I not bother?

Gaming is okay, but JUST okay as far as Crysis and COD4 goes. Shortly after I upgrade CPU, I would also like to upgrade my video card from an Nvidea Geforce 8800GT, to a Radeon 4870. quite a bit of money, that's why I'm asking if it will be worth it.

I have the latest BIOS for the MB, but would the CPU change require a windows reinstall for the new hardware?

The video card is a good upgrade but keep in mind you may need a new PSU to support the higher power needs of the upgrade. So you may want to use the CPU money on a new PSU.

550W power supply at the moment, . You say video card is a good update, but it would come secondary to a new CPU (8500) Also would the 6750 that I have now be a bottleneck for the new video card?

Edit: It looks like I would need 2 6 pin power connectors for this card, so I guess I WOULD need a new power supply as well

How did you determine that it's solely the MB that's causing you OC problems?
What steps have you taken to isolate the MB?

Um...motherboard won't overclock, so I guess I just "assumed" that it was the mobo. I set values, then it does this on and off thing a few times, then goes back to "regular" speed of 2.67 GHz. I have a whole thread dedicated to my "problems" here somewhere.

Oops Blain, I forgot about that In truth...overall, I am happy with the motherboard. I just think that I could get better FPS gaming with a higher clocked CPU...maybe(?)

e6750 should be sufficient, although an OC to 3GHz (or so) wouldn't hurt.

That said, a 4870 1GB would be quite an upgrade from your 8800GT.

GPUs improve FPS not the CPU and your CPU at stock speed isn't hindering the video card at all.
