CPU upgrade question

I have a 1.7G celeron (400mhz fsb, 128K cache), w/512mb pc2100 in my system, and have pondered upgrading to a P4 2.4G (400mhz fsb, 512K cache). It's listed at $194 at Newegg. I don't game much, but I was wondering if I would see a noticeable difference in system speed in everyday applications, web surfing, word processing, etc., and occasional gaming. Also, is the price likely to drop when Intel releases their 3G chips?

I see in your system specs you have a Dell 845G based board. Can you use a 2.4B 533 FSB CPU? It costs the same and will boost performance even more.

You should definitely hold off on that upgrade. Wait until the highest clocked CPU your motherboard can accept becomes a price that you can afford. That is the time at which you should upgrade. Also, if you board can accept a Northwood with the 533MHz FSB, definitely go that route. The 845G should be able to accept at 533MHz FSB CPU. The 512K L2 cache on the Northwoods is a nice bonus as well, especially since you only have 128KB of L2 cache on your current CPU.
