The processor feeds the info to the card.
At high resolutions, 1080p and above, performance will rely much more heavily on the GPU rather than CPU.

An E8x00 at 4GHz is not slow whatsoever anyways. However, it depends if the game we're talking about benefits from quad cores, instead of higher clockspeeds.
 
would it be worth while to replace an E8500 dual core with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz? Im running 4 bg's of ram with a 260gtx.

For the online multiplayer I doubt you'll need more than a dual core.

The single player campaign may be different if there is sophisticated AI programming.
