CPU Upgrade Question (XP Processors)

Hello,

Currently I am thinking about upgrading my processor from an Athlon XP 1700+ to a Athlon XP 2500+. My questions are about whether it is worth the extra $20 or so to get the mobile version of this processor and if my motherboard supports it (MS-6380-KT3 Ultra2). I am also going to overclock this processor but I am wondering how should I go about it, and if my CPU Fan/Heatsink is good enough (Thermaltake Volcano 7+).

As you can see it supports FSB @ 100/133/166. The second link says it supports the Barton 2500+. I was wondering whether the Mobile version is also compatible.

Ah...you're good to go then. If it supports the 2500+ Barton, then the mobile chips will also be supported, as they are identical except the mobile runs at the same speed but at a lower voltage.
 
the newer releases of the Barton's are locked. Go for the mobile, since it is fully unlocked (at the moment) I would go for a thermalright SLK model on the processor, since you are planning on OCing it. They are really good HS and you can put a 92mm fan at low RPM's on it and it becomes much quiter than the thermalbreaks. If you don't mind the noise you can couple this with a 92mm tornado that puched 119 cfm. You computer may literally take of, but what the heck, at least its cool🙂
 
A better heatsink is always a welcome upgrade, but the mobile XP's run at a lower voltage and therefore generate a lower core temp. Your Volcano should be fine for now if you don't have the extra cash right away for a high end HS. But definitely do the extra $ for the mobile. With your MB, you can use it but not likely get every drop of performance out of it. But if a few months from now you pick up a new MB, you don't want to be kicking yourself for trying to save a few bucks on your CPU.


 
For now its good, yes. He is looking to overclock though. Not saying he needs the 92mm Tornado, just letting him know it was available. I have mine coupled with the panaflo 92mm.
 
your mobo needs to be able to change cpu multipliers in the bios if you want to work on the mobile barton, since you would have to manually set the fsb and multi. if you don't have it in your bios, then the mobile will run at a very low multi, and low fsb maybe. then your only option would be a regular barton.
