CPU Upgrade problem

:(

With the kind help of "Oldfart" and others on this board, I purchased the necessary hardware to upgrade my Pentium II 350 to a Intel Celeron 1GHz (with a Slot1 to Socket 370 converter). Unfortunately my MOBO doesn't like it! I have an Abit BH6 1.01 with SS BIOS, which should have been OK, but when I slotted in the new chip and fired the PC up all I got was a series of loud beeps from my PC speaker, and the monitor would not come on. When I put the old Pentium II 350 back in, the loud beeps continued, and still no monitor display.

I am writing this from work as my home PC lies in pieces!

Any ideas?

Don't panic - you more than likely just unseated something you shouldn't of.

Put back your old CPU and check your memory and graphics card are seated firmly. If the beeps continue count them and let us know how many there are - they will indicate where the problem lies.

I think you've already done this but...

When you get the machine working again you may need to ensure you have upgraded the BIOS on the motherboard to the latest version so it recongnises the new CPU. Check Abits website.

Mitzi is correct.

Just to be on the safe side, as Mitzi says, re-seat everything. I'd suggest putting your old chip back and making sure everything is fine for the upgrade. Its a lot easier to sort something out with a working PC! :)

Once you have flashed the BIOS with the latest version (I presume you havent yet?) then try putting your new CPU in.

Good Luck!

Thanks

I will try tonight. I HAD my BIOS up to the latest possible version for my BH6 version 1.01 (SS). I've checked Abit's website and it appears to be the most recent. Assuming I get my monitor on and kill the beeping, should I set the CPU to the maximum? I note that the BIOS only goes up to a Celeron 700 and I have a Celeron 1Ghz. One other small point. I bought a fan, rated up to 1.2Ghz, but it is for a Socket A, and doesn't clip to the new CPU. It does however stick to it using the adhesive pad provided. Should I get a new one or not?

I'm having problems with my upgrade parts. My 1Ghz Celeron CPU is causing problems with my startup. Before removing my old Pentium II 350 processor, I set the BIOS to "User Define" and set the speed at 100 x 10. When I restarted my PC, the first DOS message confirmed that the Celeron was 1Ghz, I then got a memory confirmation of 512MB - then .. nothing! The system freezes! When I reboot the same thing happens, or worse, I get no display at all on my monitor.

My new Hard Drive is giving me problems too. When I connect both my old & new hardrives up, the system hangs after recognising the master drive(my old one). I have tried running FDISK using my Windows 98 startup disc, but having created a primary and advanced section on the new drive, I cannot get the PC to recognise it as a primary slave.

Any ideas?

I recently put a Celly2-850 into a BH6 Rev. 1.0? board and OC'ed it to 1.054GHz. It is working fine. My BIOS says I have a PIII-800EB. But, once running I can check the settings with SISoft Sandra and it is running at 8.5 x 124MHz. I did not flash the laters BIOS, and might not since it is working fine.

You might try clearing the CMOS with the on-board jumper and starting over. That has fixed problems for me in the past with ABIT boards.

I had a problem with another system recently where I couldn't add a second HD. Never got it to work, but I suspect it is the PS. With 2 drives connect I never got video. Disconnect it and it works fine.

Good luck!

Have you checked the jumpers on your HDD? Must change the old HDD to slave.

Good luck!
