Hi,

I want to upgrade my current athlon 1.4ghz CPU to an athlon xp 1800+, I have the money ready and the tools to do it, but I'm thinking that if I do it I might get the BSOD about changes in hardware and contacting technicians. I went through this before when I upgraded my mobo from my old iwill ka266 to the msi kt3 ultra, and it was a pain (I had to put the old board back, then it booted fine, but I had to format the hd inorder to avoid the BSOD. I'm sure that you all know what I'm talking about when you've upgraded something under XP, so can someone please tell me the procedure I should take in avoiding a full format of my hard drive again.... I know that Microsoft does this so that hardware settings are applied to the new devices, but how do I get around this? Should I do something in the control panel... or install a patch or what? Once I do that, then what? Thanks for your time... and I appreciate everyone's help :) ;)

You really shouldn't have any problems at all with just a CPU upgrade.

As for Windows hardware detection, as long as you haven't upgraded many other components for a while, then just replacing the CPU shouldn't disrupt the hardware locking algorithm.

so I won't encounter any BSOD like I had with my mobo if I upgrade the CPU? What is the hardware algorithym that you guys are talking about ... and the reason why I didn't want to do a clean install on my mobo is because its a big drive and I have important documents such as digital pictures on my hard drive ... thanks guys for your help... :)

First - here is a link to the page where you can setup a rig page if you like to include in your sig - edit your profile with the link that is created. Myanandtech.com

Second - I upgraded my CPU from a 1.2Ghz T-bird to a XP 1800+ last night - easy - just make sure you have your bios automatically optimize your CPU's settings (my system wouldn't post until I set those parameters to adjust automatically) - that option is easy to find.

Good luck!

I have created a rig page, but how does everyone create a "signature" with the rig link on every post?

my rig

like this? I had to click on http link... then select a name.... that takes too long how do you guys do it right away ... don't tell me you do this same proceedure everytime you post, cause I've seen some of you with quotes too?

guywithoutaclue: click profile at top of page, scroll down to signature, click the symbols link below it and you will see how to add a link to your signature. Voila, simple as that! This will show up everytime you post after you update.
