I would like to upgrade my 4 yr old Pentium IV 2.4GHz CPU to something faster. I have the older ASUS P4S8X board with the 478 socket. Looking for recommendations on fastest CPU, heat sink & fan upgrades to use on my existing board. Trying to play the newer games just isn't cutting it. Thanks.

3.06GHz P4 on the 533 bus will be the fastest proc that board will support. The Thermalright XP-90 is a good heatsink which hooks straight onto the stock S478 retention bracket.

It supports a 533MHz FSB, so it should take a 3.06GHz Pentium 4.

Assuming you already have a decent AGP card for your gaming, then the P4 3.06 (533) mentioned above is good as it gets on your current motherboard. Sadly, the 533FSB is pretty limiting for the P4 architecture, and you're probably stuck with the same slow memory speed.

Fry's has the Intel e6300 with ecs board for $199.98 today. It has agp and pc3200 support, as well as ddr2. I'm going to download the manual and see if it has any bios adjustments for overclocking.

Just got back from fry's looking for a Intel D345 CPU. He just laughed as he informed me that they haven't carried that old stuff for awhile. Looks like I will have to order on line. The graphics card I am running is the ATI All in Wonder AGP card.
