CPU upgrade for my wife's computer

My wife's computer currently has a AMD XP1700+ with an Asus A7V266-E motherboard. I would like to upgrade the processor to something faster, but don't want to replace the motherboard. Asus's website indicates that with the latest bios, this motherboard can support up to a XP2600+.

My question is can this board support the XP2600+ Barton core or can it only support the Thouroughbred core which runs at a slower FSB?

Thanks!

Any idea where to find a gently used one or a resonably priced new one besides eBay?
I will post a message in the For Sale/Trade forum on this site in a little bit.

IIRC, the 2600+ tbred b with 133 bus was both rare and very costly. Not sure about how much it costs now, but getting a 2400+ tbred b may be worth looking into if your board doesn't take barton chips.

I think getting a sempron deal from frys would be better. the sempron 2500+ should be faster and can be had for ~50 bucks

I thought that the sempron had a 333MHz bus, which means that it would not work with the A7V266-E motherboard that is in the computer, correct?

I can't find anything on Asus's website indicating if the A7V266-E will work with Sempron's or not.

TBred only according to their documentation...
Asus Bios Docs

And no, not the Sempron...
