CPU Upgrade (E8400)?

I inhereted an E6300 and an EVGA 680i Mobo from a friend. I thought I would be able to overclock the chip but it runs super hot (55C idle around 60C under load). I even tried an Arctic Cooling Frezer 7 Pro with no better results. So, I was thinking of investing in an E8400 for some improvement and to possibly overclock (not to any extreme). Would this upgrade be worth it? If I do upgrade, should I stick with the 680i? I won't be running SLI, but the board seems stable as is. As for use, I am currently playing Crysis:Warhead and am close to getting sucked back into WoW...

Thanks for any thoughts.

Are you sure your getting correct temp readings? If a better cooler isn't giving you better cooling results then you need to improve the airflow threw your case.

I think so. I have used CoreTemp as well as the nVidia system monitor and they come up about the same, also looked in the BIOS. I have a fan in the front and one in the back and airflow is pretty good, temp inside the case is usually in the 30-35C range...

That depends on his ambient temps. If this computer is somewhere warm then right of he is in a lose situation.
Now I also had warmers temps on my p965. However the p45 I just bought along with some artic silver dropped my temps into the 30s.

Ambients please. We need a point of reference. Also, make sure your bios up to date and will support the 8400 if you decide to upgrade.

I had a problem with that motherboard and CPU temps a while ago. What happened was that the motherboard flexed when I installed either the stock cooler or the Freezer Pro 7 that I had. I think that made the cooler lose contact.

In any case, I RMA'd the motherboard. You might not have that luxury.

Thanks for the responses guys. I just fired up my PC. The room it is in is about 22C. According to the probe my case has in it, the temp in there is 29C. CoreTemp shows both cores at 53C right now but it is slowly working it's way up to the 55-60 it seems to hover at. I have applied and reapplied Arctic Silver 3 times with no improvement.

i had a pretty hot running e6300 but not that hot - it got temps like that while clocked to 2.33ghz - try another heatsink as was noted before so you have a proper comparison - if temps are similar or higher you have an insanely hot chip which isn't 100% unheard of
