Assuming these CPUs work, these are the ones I am considering (Other suggestions are welcome).

xeon x5667 $42
xeon e5645 $40
xeon e5679 $80

Compatibility
I have an old dell computer that I am looking to upgrade, and I had a question about compatibility. I was considering purchasing a xeon cpu to put in until I have the money to upgrade later.

Anyways, this is my motherboard as detailed by Aida & CPUz.

Motherboard Name: Alienware Aurora
Model: 04vwf2 A02
Chipset: x58 rev13
Southbridge: 82801JR (ICH10R)
LPCIO: Fintek F71882f

BIOS:
Alienware
A10
07/30/10

I can't find better specs of the board than this. Dell doesn't even give a parts list for the PC, nevermind specs.

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/servicetag/ht62nm1/upgrade

Apparently there is a bios update, but I don't want to risk flashing this board if the update won't actually do something useful. Of course, I haven't done this since floppy disks were around, and it seems it's just an executable now. Meh, I might consider this.

So, what do you guys think? I have my eyes on a xeon x5679 for $80, but I am uncertain whether it will work in my system. Also, is it worth paying extra for the higher stock clocked CPU if you plan to OC anyways?

According to,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_X58

The X58 chipset can only utilize the Xeon 5500 series. I am hoping this is just outdated info, but if it's true, what chipset is required for the newer LGA1366 xeon CPUS?

There is no newer 1366 Xeon's. The 5500/5600's were the last of them and many (most?) X58 boards can run them. I've got 3 x58 systems at home all running L5640's.

By 'newer' I meant made post Gainestown, 5500 series.

That's what I was thinking, but everything I found, including that wiki either doesn't list the 5600 xeons or doesn't list the xeon at all.

I was under the impression that the I7 980x extreme edition was basically the same as the Xeon x5680.

What CPU would you recommend?

I am currently considering these 3
xeon x5667 $42
xeon e5645 $40
xeon e5679 $80
