CPU too hot

Hi guys...

I just build a PC with a Q6600 and a Infinity heatsink.

I have 60 °C in idle, and it easly go to 75 °C under load.

I also use Ubuntu instead of win.

So what do you think? it isn't normal, is it? Maybe I just put too much heat paste on the cpu? should i remove a bit of it? Or maybe it is linux?

My first thought is your heatsink must not be fully latched on all four posts.

Is the Infinity HSF a push-n-click type HSF or does it have a backplate that gets bolted to the HSF?

i think it is a push and click... my mistake was that i mounted the MB first and the HSF second.... i think i'll just have to unscrew the MB and place the HSF better...

I'm not hitting 60C under full load at 333x9, but maybe that's because of my ambient.

On another note, assuming the little yellow mark for the CPU is facing down-right when the system is sitting up, anyone know where cores 0 and 2 are? I overtightened my cooler on that side so its about 7C higher than 0-3 at full load.

i have the Q6600 and i installed the CPU and heatsink before i installed the mobo into the case. it does make it so much easier to do especially with the push and click type heatsinks. i was having trouble posting the first time i booted up my system and i took the mobo out and looked at how the heatsink was sitting on the CPU and it wasn't level. one side was touching but the other wasn't. now i don't even use thermal paste and temps are in the low to mid 40's.

Sounds like your heatsink's surface was warped, or the CPU's IHS. You should consider lapping them, or at least the heatsink since that won't void your CPU warranty. Low to mid 40's under full load? I'd find that hard to believe without any TIM or freakishly low ambients. Do you see penguins outside?

Yes, that's definitely your problem. BTW,. don't remove the heatsink, just remove the motherboard from the case, and finish seating it. Put one hand on the motherboard behind the CPU, so you don't ruin your motherboard/break traces, and get to pushing on those damned little feet.

the heatsinks surface wasn't warped i didn't have the push screws in all the way on 1 side. low to mid 40's with no load.

get a new heatsink. i have my q6600 at 3 ghz at vcore of 1.26 volts on a Tuniq tower and it idles low 40s always. under load at low 50s and thats with the fan in the heatsink at like 800 rpm
