I just bought a msi k7n2-l motherboard, AMD xp 2100+ cpu and 256megs of samsung ram.

I also bought a case and powersupply off some guy. I figured i needed a 300w for these new processors so thats why I bought it.
I installed everything and tried starting it up but the usb bracket LED readout said that the processor was damaged or wasn't installed properly. I kinda freaked but then realized theres a new 4pin power plug on the motherboard that my powersupply didn't have. Anyway, i got a new powersupply and its got that extra 4pin 12v plug and I tried using it. Thing is, i still get the 2 red and 2 green LED display which means my cpu is either toast or not installed right.

I've taken the cpu off and checked it but it looks good (now im worried about if i have to re-paste it) and now im stumped. Is there any other option other than try and return the CPU? Did powering it up before without that 4pin plug fry something? I don't see how that could be the problem but I'm fresh out of ideas here.
I dont get any display show up on my monitor, it stays in standby. Everything whirs up but thats about it.

please help!

I just noticed that the 2 red 2 green readout could also mean "initializing hardrive controller"
But if that was what it was doing, would'nt it still display something on the monitor?

I think i figured it out :)

i changed a jumper that switched the fsb from 133 to 100
i thought the 2100 was 266?

but now the bios reads my cpu as a 1500 and not 2100???

if anyone could give me some data for the bios settings that would be great.

Run a program called memtest86 and see if it will pick up any bad memory (that is if you can boot to a floppy). I think the memory should run at 133. What memory did you get?

Sorry I can't help you out more, but I'm not up on that motherboard.

Do you mean it reads 1500ghz or Athlon XP1500+ ?

The XP2100+ doesn't run at 2100ghz .
I don't remember what it does run.
Someone else ought to chime in!:D

The XP2100+ should be running at an actual 1.73 GHz; my own XP2000+ runs at 1.67GHz for comparison.

According to MSI's site, AthlonXP 2100+ 133 13 OK, your board will support that processor. Additionally, since an XP1500+ runs at 1.33GHz, that would correspond with your processor running at a 100fsb and a 13x(locked) multiplier. ;)

So in order to get the correct speed, you need to change the fsb to 133 - that will give you the 1.73GHz the processor can handle; if the system fails at that then you need to check your ram. :)
