Hi guys, thanks for your help on putting this stuff together. I have an ASRock dual vista with Intel 920 and 2 gigs ddr2 ram and Jetway ATI Radeon X1600 pro video card and 450 watt PS. The problem is the cpu is running 82C and the mb 32C (according to what it reads in the cmos). It is cutting off sometimes after 15-20 seconds. This last time it has stayed on until I cut it off after about 15 minutes. I am using the fan/heatsink that came with the CPU from Intel. Any advice would certainly be appreciated. As you can tell, I am a real novice at all this. Thanks

The cpu came with a fan and heatsink and the heatsink already had the compound on it. It looked like a square pad. It didn't say anything about adding any.

If you haven't any thermal grease on hand get some, and reseat your heatsink. The 775 push pins are often difficult. Unless you have grease do not remove the heatsink but following the instruction release and reset the pushpins ALWAYS working opposing corners possibly it will seat itself, Other than that your best way to go is with an aftermarket cooler.

Is it okay to add to what is already on there, or should I scrape that off and start over?
Thanks

Clean the surface of both the CPU and heatsink well. I suggest 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (available at most grocery stores). Wiping with a no lint cloth. This is a critical process in the building of a rig, do not just throw it together.

If you have some thermal paste, go ahead and use it. If not, order something good like Arcitic Silver or Ceramique. If you read around, you'll find those to be highly recommended.

Use enough paste to cover the chip, but not so much that it runs over when the heatsink is applied. Should be a thin and even coat.

Good luck building and happy computing!

Thanks Woodbutcher and Dream Operator and the others who made suggestions. I cleaned the factory stuff off and put a thin coat of new thermal grease and it is now operating at 41C instead of 82C. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that the problem is well in hand. I really appreciate all the help.

You didn't have the heatsink connected properly the first time. The thermal substance that comes on the stock heatsink is decent quality, and you don't drop 40c by changing thermal paste.

Glad it's working for you now.
