CPU thermal paste/ grease?

Is this stuff really necessary? Do AMD CPU's need it more the a Pentium?

It is not necessary but it is very helpful in Heat Transfer. AMD processors do tend to benefit more from it than Intel processors.

Yup. But having said tht, some form of thermal compound is needed between the CPU & the HSF. Paste & grease is just some types.

Yeah...as AMD runs hotter than Intel does.

It can drop your CPU temps by 2-3c, maybe more depending on the type. Is it necessary? At todays processor speeds, yes. Some type of thermal material needs to be between the CPU and heatsink. Do you need paste or grease? It all depends if you're going to O/C. If you're running stock speeds, a stock cooler and thermal interface material will do. If you're going to O/C, temp and voltage is life. The cooler the better.

Having some type of thermal paste is necessary in my opinion. It ensures good heat transfer between the CPU and the heatsink.

On the core of the CPU...paper thin. On the bottom of the HSF, put a layer thinner (something like clear coating). Anyway, read the instruction on ASII w/site.
