I recently installed an Athlon XP 2200+ in my MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard. I used a ThermalTake Copper shim along with a volcano 7+. I was having problems with it not booting up (not even POST'ing). I thought it was not recognizing the CPU so MSI is sending me a new BIOS chip that will allow the mobo to recognize the cpu . While I am waiting for the BIOS chip to show up, I decided to get a "less obtrusive" cpu cooler. Upon de-installation of the HSF, I notice that there is NO Arctic Silver heatsink compound on the die of the cpu AT ALL. It is still on the base of the HSF! So now I am wondering if by chance the CPU suffered a thermal death and thats why it wouldnt POST at all. Anyone have any thoughts, or know if the MSI KT3 would shut down if the CPU were to start overheating? Im going crazy here waiting for the BIOS chip to try it out. TIA...
