CPU Temps

The HDD hasn't come yet, but I wanted to make sure everything else was in working order. So I booted it up and went into the BIOS. The temperature reading there stayed around 55C after I'd left in on for a while. I'm pretty sure that that would be OK for an idle temp. I'll get a load temp as soon as that HDD gets here. So do you guys think I could improve on that any? Thanks!

Those temps are a bit high for idling in the BIOS. Granted you have a Palomino, which runs hotter than the newer .13 core T-Breds. You might want to get a stronger fan with your SK-7, like a YS Tech adjustable. That way, you can adjust the fan speed accordingly. I used to have the same processor and idled at about 34, first with a Zalman 6000Cu and 120mm fan, then idled at 32 with a SLK-800 and TT SmartFan2 controlled by a Sunbeam Rheobus.

AS3 also takes a few days to properly set itself, so temps could go down a bit more in a few days.

Good luck with the new system

Your temps are fine. My XP2200 ran for 4 months 24/7 at 63ºC at full load. It's ok. For better idle temps you might want to consider tweaking the KT333 with WCPREdit.

OK, I got the hard drive in, and booted it up to install Windows. I have the Shutdown Temperature in the BIOS set to 75C. Right as I got to the "Create Partition" area of the Windows installation, the computer shut down. I immediately booted it back up and went into the BIOS. The CPU temperature was 70C! It was idling at 55C the other day, why so high all of a sudden!? Please help...

Did you check to see if the fan was still running? Did u knock into the HS at all and mebe unseat it? HS installed properly in the first place?

All fans are still running, HS installed correctly. It could've gotten bumped, but the clips are still connected.

EDIT:

I found the problem. I had removed the CPU fan to install a longer molex connector on it. I then put it back in upside down. It was sucking instead of blowing. I'll check back here if I have any more problems.

/EDIT

Help! After I fixed the fan, the commputer shutdown during format of the hard drive. I've built several computers and never have I had one do this. Should I take off the shutdown temperature thing so I can get through the installation? Temporarily underclock maybe?

One other question... How accurate is the BIOS temperature readout anyway?

Is there maybe a problem with the thermal compound? You say you've built systems before, so I'd guess you did that fine, but it is just a thought.

The thermal compound is new. I followed all of the directions on Arctic Silver's website.

I just booted it up and let it sit a while in the BIOS. CPU temp leveled off at about 66C. Should I try reinstalling the HS?

First touch the heatsink and make sure the readings you are getting from the motherboard are accurate...
If its 66ºC it should be 150ºF, which is very very hot.
If it is really that hot, you should first reseat the heatsink. make sure its getting tight contact and reapply the paste paint thin.
If none of that works check your case airflow. Use smoke to trace intake/exhaust points and look at how efficiently the air is getting into the cpu.

I did touch the heatsink (it was either right before or right after I shut it off) and I did not find it hot at all. I could keep my finger on there as long as I wanted. These CPUs are supposed to opperate up to 85C or something like that right? So could I just turn this Shutdown Temperature off and install Windows, and then use MBM? Or would that report the same temperature as the mobo does.

As for the airflow, the case temp says 31C.

EDIT:

Another question: I may have been wrong about the core. I have a brown pcb... is that T'bred or Pally?

/EDIT

Is the heatsink cold to the touch?
If its cool then it probably doesn't have good contact with the cpu.
It should be at least a little warm with a palomino on a sk-7 after a minute (if it stays on that long).
How long does the computer stay on before it shuts off?
If its only a few seconds you definitely have the heatsink seated wrong.
Watch the cpu in the bios as soon as it boots up, and monitor the cpu temp.
if it rises fast before it cuts off thats another indication that its seated wrong.

Woot!

(yes, the HS was a little warm)

The BIOS readings now show 33C after I installed Windows. I have no idea why... but anyway.

Because Windows can send the HALT command to the CPU to stop it, where as the BIOS can't.
