CPU temperatures

I recently installed Everest Ultimate to see what temp my computer was running at and I noticed something that seems strange. My CPU temperature is much higher than my core temps.

Right now at idle my temps are:
CPU: 51C
Core #1: 25C
Core #2: 25C

Is that normal for the core and CPU temps to vary that much? Also, 51C seems pretty high. Is it too high?

I have a Core 2 Duo E6750 with whatever heat sink comes stock with HP Media Centers.

I have the same "problem" with my Everest. I've been searching for some time now but seems like everyone is using CoreTemp or RealTemp which both "only" display the cores temps and not the "overall" CPU like Everest.

I might be wrong but I think we should only look at the different cores temps as nobody seems to care about that "overall" CPU temperature given by Everest.

Occasinally Everest reports the chipset temps as overall cpu temp. The other issue is that the mainboard temp sensor for overall cpu temp may be innacurate.
The core temps are really the only temps that matter. TCase temps are given for thermal design specs for OEMs.

The other thing to check is that the TJunction temps are correct. For example in my MC machine Everest uses Tjunction of 90C while real temp uses 100C. Everest always reports temps lower by 10C.

Thank you for the answer on the "overall" CPU temperature.

But how can you know which TJmax is the right one for a Q6600 G0 like the one you have in your Media Center computer?

I also have a G0 and depending on where I get my information, TJmax can be as low as 90 and up to 105 and Intel doesn't seems to provide that info. It's confusing...

Intel finally told us about 6 mos ago that tjmax is 100c for core2-based 45nm cpus. However, you could spend a lifetime going into the minutiae of coretemp, realtemp, thermal design specs, etc. iirc it is 95c for the 65nm cpus, however. Let's see if I can dig up that article...

edit: here it is: http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=478

I couldn't find the info on 65nm cpus, however. UncleWebb at XS wrote the realtemp software, he probably knows the answer. He might be spending more time at techpowerup now that they're hosting realtemp, however.

edit (part deux): Don't worry about the core temperatures. all the temp monitoring programs just display distance to tjmax anyway; ie, a temp of 72 means nothing until you know what tjmax is and is actually meaningless anyway. 28c from tjmax, however, tells you everything you need to know. set your temp monitoring software (I prefer realtemp obvoiusly, but core temp, speedfan, everest, etc are all popular) to display distance to tjmax and forget about it.

I don't, nor in reality does it matter. I just make sure that I have a delta of 20C from TJmax under Linpack stress test. (Works out to 30C+ under prime 95)

No app will ever get to that temp, and even if it does its still in safe region.

I think I understand but how can you know if the distance to tjmax is safe or not?

It just depend what temps you feel comfortable having your chip run at. But I would say something like 20 is a good number to stick to under max load. It just means that under worst case load (linpack) the temps are still reasonable.

Thanks you. I just ran Linpack to see if the difference in temperature was that great compare to prime95 and I get 34 to distance to TJMax compare to 41 with prime95.

Things seem to have changed since the days were I overclocked my Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton) or my AMD 64 3200+(Winchester). It seems it was much simpler back then... that or I'm getting old:(.

Now if only I could manage to get right of that weird electrical interference noise I get when my CPU's load is near the 100%...

Thanks again for your help.
