CPU temperatures

First post.. hey guys!

Well, my dad went way overboard on my Christmas and got me a new PC (check the link and you'll see just how far over)

http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=29498

Anyway, I was benchmarking it and having it run through Maya when I decided to open up the temperature monitoring utility. I saw it get up to 78 under load. That just doesn't seem right to me though, especially with a ThermalTake heatsink--the SilentBoost K8. Could the motherboard be reporting bogus temperatures? Well, I'd just like your thoughts cause this is too nice of a CPU to get fried :)

Nice rig
Dont take any chances with that cpu!
It is likely that the motherboard is displaying the wrong temp, that is common. CHeck for BIOS updates.
It is also common for there to be a bad connection between the heatsink and cpu after the initial install.
I would do this. Underclock the cpu and drop the volts until you fix it.

I'd just like to say HOLY CRAP.
Your dad went way over the top. You want to pass him over to me next Christmas?

And how much does your dad make? Lol.

I would open that baby up and re-seat that heatsink, and make sure it's on the right way (there have been plenty of incidents were people put it on backwards) and that there is a nice, flat connection between the two.

Edit:
You might want to also try placing a thermal sensor on the CPU and check what it is outside the BIOS.

lol guys, lets just say my dad makes enough :) I think he's just getting sentimental though... I'm an only child and I'll be leaving for college in not too long.

Anyways, I'm starting to think that the BIOS temp is completely wrong because I've seen some reviews of my heatsink on similiar processors ( FX-51 on one review) and saw it hit 50 C in one test... So I'm not too concerned. Anyways, thanks for your help guys :)

I wouldn't stop and just assume that everything is ok without a thorough evaluation. 78C is pretty damn hot and may have a pretty big impact of stability and the life of the CPU (and at this rate it won't be too long). Most temperature problems revolve around the way a heatsink is seated and the fan used to cool it (like what direction its facing :p).

I reiterate my suggestion.

LOL, I asked for a new PC for christmas and my parents gave me a check for $100 for PC parts.

Set up correctly, it should never be that high. Either the sensor is messed up (pretty common on mobos), or your CPU/heatsink aren't seated right. Did you build this yourself, or is it a pre-fab? If you built it yourself, make sure that the heatsink is seated correctly and there isn't too little or too much paste on it. You may want to scrape off the CPU and apply a new coat of thermal compound just to be sure. I definately would not want to jeapordize a $900 CPU and the rest of that system.

Its a prebuilt one (ABS) and everything inside of it is done really well. I just did reseat the heatsink just to make sure. I don't have any thermal sensors handy, but if anything opens up tomorrow, I'll go pick one up. RadioShack or CompUSA a better bet for finding one? Small towns suck.

Check your temps in the bios see if it's similar to the temperature monitor while in windows.

Did you say it was pre-built? I'd be calling those guys ASAP. I'm sure for what your Dad paid for it, they should offer some support/explanation/hand holding for this. Good luck and nice rig, too.
