That's the idle temp? Check it with some other application in case the BIOS is just plain wrong. That's too hot for an idle temp.

Are the bios temps wrong from time to time?

I had some difficulty in attaching the cooler and had to take it off and reset it - I did not add any thermal paste when I reset it

I just sent for some arctic ceramic - should I pull the cooler and add some themal paste??

Will a 3rd party cooler make much of a difference??

If that's idle temps, then the HSF isn't seated properly, with either to much or not enough thermal grease applied. And yes third party coolers do make a difference. While it would be normal for your e6600 to idle at 40ish celsius, an 3rd party cooler could drop that to the low 30's without much problems, and high 20's for top notch air coolers.

If that 60C temp is load, it's not too bad. I ran Orthos on my E4300 @ 2.7 for a full day @ 25C ambient and saw 60C load, using a Zalman 9700NT with Arctic Silver ceramique.

I wouldn't necessarily trust BIOS temp readings. Try a 3rd party monitoring app for a second "opinion" or a real temp monitor with a lead that mounts between CPU and HSF.

my bios readings are way off

I use CoreTemp to monitor my cpu temps and highly recommend it

Yeah, use coretemp or rmclock to read your core temps. Report back using one of those apps.

I have a similar (but not extact) setup:
E6600 w/ Stock cooler
Asus P5K Deluxe
2gig G.Skill DDR2 800
Sapphire X1950XT 256m
Antec 900 w/ 4 case fans

IDLE Temps:
CPU: 30
Core 1/2: 36/36
System: 26

LOAD Temps (ortho):
CPU: 53
Core 1/2: 63/63
System: 29

Using ASUSProbe (CPU & System temps), Core Temp (Cores), SpeedFan (all, plus HDD), Intel TAT (Cores)

I assumed that given my temps that I had not secured my cpu cooler -

I bought some arctic silver ceramic - demounted the stock cooler - cleaned the paste off the cooler and cpu with isopropyl alcohol and put a rice grain of the grease in the center of the cpu put the cooler on and latched it properly (seems very tight) - temps (reported in the asus bios hardware monitor - os not yet installed) as cpu temp 48 C (118F). This is down from 60C that I had before - This is at idle - no OS - only the bios - Hardware as per my first post -

Am I OK now??
There is a COOLER MASTER Hyper TX2 HSF for about $20 after rebate - Do I need it??

Thanks

Steve

Copy of my post on another thread:

http://www.tomshardware.com/fo...core-temperature-guide

Seems like anything up to CPU 50C, Core 1/2 65C is considered safe.
