i have athlon 64 3400+ on ePox 8KDA mobo.

i used stock heatsink with arctic silver. and im wondering if the temperature reading is bugged or something cause my CPU temp is around 50-55C idle.

does anyone know if the mobo or the cpu is known for misreading the temperature or am i doing something wrong?

plz help.. thanks

my stock heatsink looks like this btw

If you have applied the Arctic Silver correctly (no excessive amounts) and attached the heatsink properly (the cam lever is locked into place) you have nothing to worry about.

im sure i applied the arctic silver correctly using the edge of a credit card as well as the heatsink too.

but these temperature just scares me. when i reset the computer after playing some games, the temperature reading is at over 60C. sometimes close to 65C.

any comments?

This is not the recommended way to apply arctic silver on a cpu with a heatspreader. Too easy to get bubbles.
Apply a small amount in the center and allow the heatsink to smooth it out.

I think you applied too much...

hmmmm ic.. i applied arctic silver on the entire heatspreader (thid layer thou)

so... how much am i supposed to apply? and how?

so.. just drop a little bit in the center and let the heatsink spread it out?

plz help =)

ps: thanks guys for replaying =)

Again -- I'm not an AMD guy -- and the AMD web-site reports a thermal limit of 90C, or 20C higher than many Pentium 4 CPUs.

But this temperature is way too high in my book. Which heatsink are you using? What sort of case cooling fans (if any)? Is this a mid-tower or full-tower case?

I would check your heatsink mounting job first. See if a spring-clip is loose, or if the heatsink is not tilted ever so slightly to one side. It COULD be that you used too much Arctic Silver. They recommend an amount the size of a kernel of long-grain rice.

Also -- Arctic Silver's instructions -- contrary to a post above -- suggests the credit card idea, or they did suggest it at one time, and I DO use a credit-card "spatula", although I usually leave a little dab of AS5 in the center of the processor cap after spreading about 3/4 of it around.

Also -- check your BIOS voltages and make sure they are set to stock values to begin with. Check AMD's web-site for a processor specification voltage.

used stock heatsink and fan. im sure the heatsink is mounted correctly.

applied thin layer of arctic silver all over the heat spreader.

i have 4 case fans (excluding heatsink fan)

btw... arctic silver i used was AS3 not AS5

i used too much arctic silver according to previous posters. hmm did i really use too much.. or did anyone else used as much as i did and went fine?

btw.. ill check the AMD site.. in the mean time.. plz more comments and help~ ^_^

thanks

Why don't you just reapply your artic silver using the method described on Artic Silver's website. Checking AMD's website won't lower your temps any.

Arctic Silver 3. Should be almost as good, but I don't use it any more. At least with AS5, you know when you've either got too little or too much -- and it takes a bit more effort since its much thicker.

There is a possibility -- keep in mind I'm just speculating -- if you got some almost invisible foreign body stuck in the AS before applying the processor -- a human hair, for instance, there could be some problem with contact.

Also -- if you say "USED stock heatsink and fan" -- is it possible that it might be the "wrong" stock HSF?

Also, again -- I was never sure that the temps reported by my mobo software were accurate until I bought a front-panel temperature-monitor and some thermal sensors with thermal tape.

I have an FX-55 with an Asus A8V and it runs completely stable (Prime95 for 7+ hours and counting) at 64C. It idles at 55C.

I have a properly seated Zalman 7000B AlCu FLower-type HSF and proper airflow through the case. Arctic Silver 5 has also been applied correctly, in the right amount.

Some have suggested that my motherboard is reading the temperature way too high. I'm not sure. People have also laughed when I reported my temperatures, saying it would shut off at 63, 70, etc. Before my HSF was seated properly, and when I was using crappy, misapplied paste (I've come a long way) Speedfan was giving me readings of 88C regularly. The bios is updated too.

I've been searching around for average temps for the FX-55 (and comparable chips, like yours), but I can only find super-frosty-superconductor-chilled overclocks running at 29C load or something..nothing that's helped. Maybe an email to AMD might clear it up. Like someone said to me, if it's running stable, don't lose sleep, it's probably not burning up.

Prime95 might give you an idea if it's running too hot. The theory behind it is pretty good. That's why I'm running it right now.
