CPU Temp

Ok, I've been reading all these posts talking about 40C temps. as the max cpu temp you should be gaming with.
My 650 cbo is currently running at....650.
(generic memory not stable o/clocked)
However, my built-in Asus utility says cpu temp is showing 70c just sitting here surfing.
(I have a P3V4X)
What gives? Is the Asus utility wrong? Or is this temp. ok? The help file says the temp reading by this program may be different than others, but says this one is more accurate.
Anybody have experience with this? thanks

If memory serves, a Bios update fixes the inaccuracy of the P3V4X's reported temperatures.

Ok, I'll try that. My version is 1003 (factory) and I've seen others' that show 1005. Maybe that'll help.

For me 1.005 still reports higher temps. than motherboard monitor. But bios temps. were lower than 1.003. I'd say trust motherboard monitor if anything.

what slotket do you have? Because with the p3v4x, its a hit or miss temp reading.. for me, and an abit slotket!!! the cpu temp is finally in line with the setup I had before(exactly same cpu/slotket, bf6 mb). This is with the 1005 bios.

Of course, as JellyBaby says, it does not help everybody. I've heard that it probably has to do with the slotket, but i'm not sure.

MBM uses the same tepmerature sensor as the BIOS. Any program that you can get just reads the temperature sensor on the motherboard. If that's shot (which it may well be if you have 70 C and are not experiencing any instability), then you can never trust any temperature reading given to you. You can install aftermarket temp sensors, though. I'm having this issue right now - my CPU is constantly at 53 C, and that's pretty hot. Even when I have the case off and a house fan blowing on it it's only a little lower, so I'm not sure whether I can trust my sensor.

No slotket. Slot 1.

As far at the bios upgrade, I looked into it and don't really see a reason to update bios. It doesn't seem to offer anything that would help my system.
I also ALWAYS have the side of my case off. The cpu is very stable. Hours of UT online and I looped 3dmark for awhile without a hitch.
I guess the temp must be wrong.
I also tried clocking it at 866 (133fsb) and even with my cheesy generic pc100 it ran through 3dmark and got a vastly higher score.
