CPU Temp with SETI?

Hello all, I just joined TeAm Anandtech several days ago, glad to be on the team!

My CPU (Athlon XP 1700+) has always run hot. The utility that came with the Gigabyte Motherboard reports it at around 59-60 C. When I run SETI@Home (CLI) it goes to around 64-65 C. This trips the alarm in the utility that says the computer should be shut down and cooled off. I have temporarily shut down SETI. My question is, is this too hot? Can I run SETI safely at this temperature? Or do I need to get a new fan? If so, any recommendations on a good fan? I don't plan on any overclocking. I go over to General Hardware and see 50 C to be pretty hot, so it kind of worries me.

I would really like to get crunching WUs again. Thanks!

I would get a new HSF i recomend the alpha 8045 with a delta or papst fan, should drop your temps by quite a bit, 60 is very hot if it is not overclocked. Personally i dislike seeing my 850@1000 go any higher then 50oc but it is a matter of preferance, just remember the critical 90oc

Hope that helps

Alex

Ps. Link for the HSF

I'm running the following rigs and their temps:

1800+ XP 1.533Ghz/OC to 1.600Ghz Runs at 49C
1900+ XP 1.600Ghz/OC to 1.730Ghz Runs at 49C (Was running at 51C up to a couple of weeks ago...weather has gotten colder and office is cooler)

I noticed that without SETI running the temps drop about 5C.

You need a good cooler and I'd recheck your Arctic Silver or whatever thermal paste you are using. Nice thin layer with the heatsink nice and flat on the CPU. Here is a cool report on coolers that even includes what they sound like. 😀

Overclockers Coolers

BTW, I'm using Volcano 6 Cu

The Alpha Pal8045 with a Papst 8412NGL is a nice combo. It cools my XP 1600+ to 49C while running Seti(that is without a case fan 😱)

While this combo is not the ultimate performer, it is supremely quiet! I can have a Papst 8412NGL running and I can't hear it at all unless I put it up to my ear.

Another plus with the Pal8045 is that it uses the holes around the socket for mounting and this is handy for keeping everything firmly in place when I move the system around because the heatsink is quite heavy...

Yes, and remember that air flow through the case can really help too. Make sure your are not just moving recirculated hot air through your HSF.

Welcome to the team! Do you have a front intake fan on your case? Do you have an exhaust fan on the rear of your case? If you don't, it will help to drop your overall temps by a significant degree ( depending on room temp ). If you do have a front and rear fan, then I'd suggest a better hsf combo for sure. Also, make sure that you case has a good air space around it--not enclosed in a cabinet or such-- so it has a chance to get cooler air.

As others have mentioned ,case cooling is very important too

Btw I have a An XP1500 @ 1.52Ghz ,with front & rear case fan

Peak temps so far
CPU 50C (running SETI)
Case 25C
Room 25C

That's using a GW FOP32,Asus A7V 266-e
