I just got a P4 2.8c and Abit IS7 and when I get into the Bios, it said my CPU Temp is 50C. Is it normal? I haven't done any OCing yet? It seems a little hot. But I just install the chip on the board and have everything run at default! Please help thanks.

Yes, that's a bit warm for idle, non-overclocked, bios temps, even for an Abit board. Are you using the stock heatsink? Do you have any case fans at all?

Yes it's quite weird! It shows that the temp is 52C even idling! It's a P4 2.8C I am sure since it only has 512k cache! I am using the stock heatsink and wondering if I have installed the heatsink correctly? Can anyone help?

Also I can't even overclock it. As soon as I set the FSB to 250 and the memory divider to 5:4 (I have PC3200 ram) then Windows won't boot! Is it becuz of the CPU:AGP:pCI ratio?

its really hard to incorrectly install the stock HSF on a P4.

did u spread the thermal compound properly? does your case have proper ventalation?

dont jump immediatly to 250 mhz FSB, use small increments

The P4 stock fan doesn't come with any compound except the little grey sheet of compound that stick at the bottom of the heatsink. I just removed the HS and reinstalled it so it should be fine. But the CPU Temp still loaded as 50C even when idled. Just wonder how people OC there P4 with the stock HS and still stay at 40C below.

I would like to try in small increment but then I don't know what to set for the memory divider. Once I set the FSB to 225 and the system won't even boot up (at least the system get to load Windows when set to 250 FSB). I need majoy help how on to OC this processor with the board. Thanks.

MY IS7 always reads way higher than my P4C800 with the same processor. I use a Zalman 7000 copper and it works very well under full load.

Irene, they have airflow through their case. I personally have two 120mm fans running at full speed, plus an 80mm intake fan on the side, which is why my XP2400 is at 43°C under full load folding proteins, even though I just have a CoolerMaster X-Dream hsf on it, and it's running at 212fsb on 1.80v. This is the case I have: Antec SLK3700AMB, which is very nice, IMO. Assuming you got one of these, or modified your case with multiple 80mm fans, you wouldn't have temp problems anymore. You have to keep your temps down to be able to overclock, along with using a memory divider.

i wouldn't worry about it
should be good and stable up past 60c
your bios and/or software might also be reporting the temps a few degrees higher too

I'm willing to bet that a processor that's running 50°C in the bios and 52°C at idle in Windows would hit 60°C in the first 5 minutes of any type of gaming, and something like Prime95 torture test would put it at least to the mid-60's in roughly the same amount of time.
