cpu temp help

seems like my cpu temp is too high (sometimes i get a BSOD memory error), i have an e1405 w/ 1.7ghz and 2gig of ram. when on dynamic switching the temp is around 55c when idiol, and i dont remember it being so high.
could this be from having too many background processes or could it be the cpu?
another question i have is installing the cpu i dont know if i was suppost to use the silver thermal stuff or not.

You must use the thermal compound - either the one that comes factory pre-applied by Intel or AMD on their HSF's, or if you ever move/remove the HSF, you must clean it and re-apply the paste.

BTW, my laptop with 2.0GHz Sempron and 2GB of RAM idles at ~50C, and I use the Antec Notebook cooler at all times.

the cpu had something on it already (felt like melted rubber), but i used the silver stuff for regular cpu's on top just in case. i downgraded from the 2ghz which had lower temps than this one, and i dont have any laptop cooler.

If you used paste on top of the thermal pad, you've got too much.

Take the heatsink off, clean CPU and heatsink with alcohol, reapply thermal paste and reinstall.

so i should use the thermal paste (again), basically cover the "mirror" area of the cpu...

could be that i had too much but the temp is pretty much the same. i just thought it was strange that the lower speed in ghz would be a hotter cpu. guess its just the cpu.

more like 50 now so the cleaning did help, possible i used too much of that stuff...
