I am getting these readings from the "PC Heath Status" entry in my Abit KT7 BIOS... 91 C taken right after playing Unreal Tournament (after it crashed...) and I had to reboot. I am using the heat sink and fan that came with the AMD Thunderbird 900Mhz Retail. It is NOT overclocked.
Definitely not... where'd you take these temps? Bios or software under Windows? your computer wouldn't be running right now if those temps were correct. If you took these temps using software under Windows, make sure you have everything correctly configured.
c'mon guys. be nice. did you screw with the voltage in cmos...make sure it is full default. i would load your default on all.
for the tbird use a taisol. quiet and they do a good job. not very expensive either.
hedgies are a little too heavy for the tbirds.no offense man. this guy does not seem like an overclocker. no need to give him a 40 dollar fan.
I have a T-bird 900 that ran at those temps it died. I sent it back RMA defective got a new one. It is definatly not seated right make sure you have that ridge lined up correctly with the socket CPU. I hope your T-bird comes back to life. Anything over 65C shut it down FAST
I took out the CPU and HSF, put everything back together, making sure everything was in correctly. I rebooted and right at this moment my temperature is at 33 C!
<< Duron 850 is also sharing the bad sides with its predecessors. It produces a lot more heat than Intel's Celeron or Pentium III processors and it is also lacking a thermal protection. The latter can easily lead to a sudden heat-death of Duron, in case the heat sink was not mounted properly or the heat sink's fan should cease to work. >>
Dude.. turn off your computer!!!....
the Pentium III is rated to go as high as 80C... but geez... 91C!!! I would reset the processor and heatsink.. maybe get a new heatsink.. or get someone else to apply the thermal paste and reseat it for you

i'm thinking a failure to remove all that needs to be removed to get to the good thermal conductivity on those retail heatsinks seems to be a common occuance. I say when in doubt, scrape it all off, even out your surface, and throw some thermal beloved patriot of your own bewteen you chip and hsf.
