CPU Temp = 100 degrees Celsius

After installing windows I rebooted the computer. Right before the Windows logo is supposed to pop up, it pauses and then turns off. I turn it back on and go into bios, and my damn CPU temperature is 100 degrees CELSIUS. No I did not misread it, it was like 180 degrees Ferenheit. The motherboard is at like 30 degrees Celsius.

When I first put the computer together, the CPU temp was like 39 degrees. Of course thats at like no load...
I dont understand though. The cpu fan is working, and so are all other fans. I am so f*cking scared/sad/pissed off. Please help me.

did you put on any thermal conductor btw the cpu and HSF?

did you forget to peel out the paper on the buttom of the HSF? the paper that covers the thermal conductor.

if the problem persist, put a pan on the CPU and fry some eggs for your gf for breakfast. :)

I took off the black thermal pad and put on a thin layer of Arctic Silver....

Wheres the best place to get eggs....

could it be that the heat censor is faulty? when it says 100C, does it feel like 100C? (touch with caution of course, or u'll get burned and your gf'll have to fry the eggs for u instead)

I dunno...I kinda doubt its faulty. It was displaying normal temperatures before, and now that I've had it off for a while its cooled down to 70 degrees. Cooled down to 70 degrees...hope no one ever has to say that again:(

I guess I'll give it a touch.

Well its not even warm...but its had a half hour to cool....I hate computers.

No, no, I take it back, I still love 'em. Sigh.

Ok, well I just turned my computer on and it says 69 degrees cecius. I turn it off and touch the heat sink right away, and it doesn't feel warm at all:Q Could this be hope?!?!

But still, if the temperature thingy is messed up, why would the computer turn off (twice) earlier? And then only turn on after it was off for a few minutes?

it turns itself off coz the bios detects that it's too hot. there might be a section in bios (depends on which mobo you have) that u can set the temperature which it'll automatically shut down the comp.

so if it's the heat censor.... prob need to RMA it. will be a pain in the butt...

the turned itself off twice, most likely not b/c it's too hot and cause the comp to crash, but mobo turn itself off for safety reason. They prob realize it's not too safe to fry eggs on CPUs ;)

Oh yeah. Duh. Its almost 6 am, please excuse my dumbassness.

Before I blame it on the temperature reader and RMA it, how can I confirm that is in fact the problem...besides just touching it. And also besides putting an egg on it and see if it cooks.;)

one way, which is a lotta trouble is to try different a different mobo or different cpu...

another way, is to wait till smarter peeps on this forum wake up and give better suggestions :) (can't come up with anything easy at the moment)

good luck!!!

Jittos you've been an awesome help. If I'm keeping you up, just say so, I'm sure I can get some help later.

Thanks:)

Maybe I'll just turn the computer on with the case open and stick a thermometer up on the heat sink. Because if this thing is off, its off by a lot and maybe it'll be pretty obvious.

:Dlol. I think I'll include some eggs when I RMA this sucker back to newegg.

Again, thanks a bunch man. Even if the thermometer isn't wrong, at least I'm not as scared/sad/pissed off.

I think Ima get some sleep, maybe tomorrow someone knows of a way to fix the readings.

Alright, its displaying temperatures at random now. After being off for 20 minutes or so, I turn it back on and it says 100 something degrees cecius. It turns off, then back on again and it says 70 degress celcius. I turn it off, wait for the fan to stop, then I stick a thermometer in the heatsink and it says 84 degrees Ferenheit (about 29 C). Well thats a bit of a relief.

Anyone know if its possible to fix the mobo's readings? I'd hate to start all over again...

If the heatsink isn't making good contact with the processor then the heatsink still would be cool to the touch......
You said it was ok before....did you take the heatsink off for any reason before the temps went up? Maybe put it back on backwards? (Is that possible with a P4? I'm an AMD guy)

Hmm. No I didnt take off the heat sink or install it backwards...but it does seem to be able to wiggle around a bit....

A little wiggle can be normal with some heatsinks. It sounds like certainly your sensor is shot. My friends computer runst at 53C CPU and 39C case and you can definately feel the warmth on the heatsink. If it were truly running at 70C you should be able to feel it. RMA that bad boy.

Not certain, but I'm pretty sure things would have started melting at 100C. But hell, you could take that thing to a 3rd world country and boil the water while reading your email! :D

HOLY $#!+

The hs/f wasn't secured! Please dont call me a newb, its my first build! Mercy!

Anyway, the CPU temp is at 38 degrees celcius in bios, I dunno what kinda CPU utilization that is (I assume almost 0), but it sounds like an ok temp (obviously much better than before), am I right?

OMG. Thank the Lord my processor actually works! I think I know what saved it too! I dont have a floppy for this computer yet, so I took one off of another computer and since I just wanted to use it quickly, I just plugged it in but didnt actually install it into the case. So I had the case open and on its side during XP install, so gravity didnt pull the heat sink to the side or anything. Wow.

Thankyou Scitex!!

yeah, a cool heatsink isn't a good thing...they're supposed to be warm/hot if they're doing their job...

and mistakes happen, but if its your first build, doesn't that make you a 'newb'? ;)

Your using the retail HSF correct?

Did u peel the piece of metal foil out from under there ?

Yes, people have a misconception that when the HSF is cool, it's doing its job. That's WRONG as stated before. If the HSF is hot as hell, only then it's doing its job and you should be happy that you installed it correctly. Cold HSF is a bad sign.

you said the heat sink can wiggle a bit? you might want to check and see if the HSF is properly locked down. I thought i had mine on right, turned on my ps and my cpu was at 90 C. the stock HSF's have to be shoved on pretty hard before you close the locking levers. you may have only partial contact of your HSF. I would try releasing the levers and checking to see that the four clips are all fully in place. just a thought.

also, scitex is right on about the cold HS.
