CPU stability woes...

So, I am having stability issues with my GF's comp.

Her -12 & -5 lines are reading way to low (high?) at -6.5 and -38, respectively. Do I have a ground or something going on her?

pertinent specs on PC:

Abit SLI board - new
Enermax noiestaker II 485W - two 18 amp +12V rails - new
4200+ X2 - new

That isn't a powerful enough psu, for an X2. At least, I wouldn't try to run it with that psu. What video card is it running, and how many hard drives, optical drives, etc?

Whaaaaat?
A 485W Enermax not enough?
You could run that rig with a 250W Dell powersupply.

But back to the OP's problem...what sort of stability issues Nat?
And where did you get the line readings from?
Have you tried unplugging unnecessary devices and seeing if it changes the situation in any way at all? Unplug any extra hard drives, add-in cards, all optical drives, the floppy drive, etc.

Last I checked, current rigs don't use negative lines. Use a reliable digital or analog multimeter and check the rails manually. Preferably from the 20/24 pin ATX connector though the 4/3 pin connectors will suffice too.

The -12 and -5v lines aren't used in modern machines, so it's nothing to worry about. If you are having actual stability issues with the machine, it's unrelated to those PSU rails.

My thoughts exactly on the power supply

I actually bought it new when it seemed the 450W fortron wasn't powerful enough. Under load, the fortron was drooping, but the enermax stays rock solid.

I just pulled the line readings from everest. I actually don't have a multimeter right now, although I would be willing to go buy one for this as I have been meaning to aquire one for quite a while.

All this machine has is one sata drive and a DVD-rw, plus an x800xt. I thought maybe heat, so now the x2 has an artic cooler pro, and I stuck a fan on the passive heatsink of the chipset to no effect.

After 4 minutes, core 0 repeatedly fails prime and games bomb out if you run them long enough. After RMA'ing one ABIT motherboard already, I am seriously considering that the CPU is just defective. Hard to believe that though. The X2 is going in my rig tonight for testing, even though my Bios is from january. Winflash locks up and I don't have a floppy in that PC

My last straw is a new case with much improved cooling, although nothing seems to be getting to hot. UPS should have delivered it yesterday, but somehow Chiefvalue didn't put the number of the town home on there, and decided to keep it until I pick it up. Today, I hope!

In any case, the GF wants her Guild Wars back

**oh, and I fired prime up last night since I changed the slots the ram was in. Well, when I checked it this morning it was off. Hurray for that. I may have shut it off though, I guess. I did plenty of prime runs last night, and it got late and I was tired
