CPU Spiking

I installed vista a few days ago and have been getting used to it but Im having cpu problems. I have a Pentium 3.0ghzC (I dont recall it being a dualcore, but dxdiag says 2 cpus, so it must be). I was talking to my friend and i had him open the vista performance monitor and tell me what % his cpu was at and he says 0-2%, he asked to check my processes in task manager and try to find anything I didnt recognize, it all seems familiar, but when I said 67 processes he said thats way too many.

Right now im running AIM, Firefox, and background programs (logitech setpoint, logitech keyboard profiler, logitech LCD profiler, avast, thats all) and Im not really sure what I can do. But with juse those programs my cpu is a steady 30%, give or take 5%, with spiking to 50+% at least once a minute.

Anything I can do to improve this? 🙁

Are you using any additional sidebar gadgets?

And you don't have a dual-core processor, your Pentium 4 has Hyper-Threading which means your processor "simulates" having 2 processor cores which improves performance, but it actually is a single-core processor.

look at the processes, see if any use more than 5%. Idle desktop should use no more than 0- 2%, see if any processes catch your attention..

With the performance monitor open with my pc idleling its getting around 2-5%. When I start moving my mouse its spikes to like 15-20% which is a problem, dont think that should be happening, should it? 4-6% of that 15-20% is what the performance monitor is using. I notice something called audiodg.exe when my aim makes sounds. I instant messaged myself and audiodg.exe shot up to 7% then back down to 0-1% Other than that nothing is really bad till I start multitasking.
