CPU shopping

Hi guys. Been muling over and over and over and over for a complete rig change for like 2 years. I nearly pulled the trigger on the 4790 last December but had to hold off because I had to allocate funds elsewhere. I was dissapointed by the 5820k high components pricing (DDR4, Mobo) and the upcoming CPUs aint looking any better with DDR4 memory costing an arms and a leg.

I'm looking for Xeon LGA1150 CPUs on ebay (used or new don't matter) at the moment or a LGA2011 CPU+mobo on ebay as cheaper alternatives for the i7 4790. My question is as is

1) Will normal non-ECC Ram work with these CPUs?
2) Does working with a server CPU entail some annoyance that I need to know of?
3) Will LGA1150 Xeon CPUs work on consumer grade motherboards?

Thanks

1. Yes, ECC wont be supported if the mobo doesnt.
2. No. If you are certain about cores/clocks.
3. Requires BIOS support. So be careful and check the mobo CPU support list.

I would hang on until Skylake comes out- it brings DDR4 to the mainstream, so hopefully DDR4 prices will come down and make the 5820k a more palatable choice.

Yes to all of your questions :)

I'm typing this on a rig with an ASUS Maximus VI Hero--a nice consumer socket 1150 board with DDR3/2133 GSkill ram- non ECC, and a Xeon E3-1240v3 a server cpu.

The only real annoyance with these cpu's is the very limited overclocking. They are mostly locked down, but you can tweak them a little in the BIOS and get a little extra oomph out of them...mine was stocked at 3.4ghz and is currently running at 3.8ghz.....

As a side note, since they don't have the built-in GPU, they draw less power and therefore run 10 degrees or so cooler than their i7 counterparts....mine usually stays around 24-26c idle and 55-65c under prime95, which is way under the rated maximums for this cpu :)

I do not mind NOT overclocking. I just need a 4 core/8 thread PC that will be cheaper than the 4790 (albeit slower) and not pay the $300-350 price tag. Buying used or out EOL items do not really matter. Once I have a rig, I keep it so long that I have to upgrade everything once I'm done with it :p

Out of curiosity, what's your current rig?

Ok here it is don't laugh! That thing is nearing its useful life. Last week my Zalman CNPS9500 cooler holding brackets both broke. I had to get it welded :p One of them broke again, so its only being held by one now! I can post a pic for shits and giggles. lol

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4Ghz)
RAM: 4GB (2GB more added from stock)
GPU: Radeon 6850 (upgraded)
SSD: Added in December
HDDS: Many

Hey, I'm still rocking a Phenom II, I'm in no position to mock anyone's PC :p Okay, yeah, probably not worth putting any more upgrades into that- I was hoping you might have on of those LGA-1156 boards, you can get some pretty good upgrades for them. (Though you could always see if there are any cheap C2Qs on eBay!)

You shouldn't even think about OC'ing with a Xeon, those things has a lot of muscle out of the box anyways.

NTMBX, I still got a X6 1090T CPU sitting around, sometimes I kind of want to use it but have no motherboard atm for it.

Looks good but he does not charge for the service. How reliable is it?

I don't know, I live in the USA so I have never used such a service.

He should charge you the postage, and then $1 or $2 more if he has to re-pack.

Likely it just means he is not making a profit from you.

Obviously the postage will cost him something. :)

TigerDirect apparently will ship to Mauritius with UPS Worldwide, if that helps any.
