CPU selection for special use system

Well, I installed Xeon 1240's (3.4GHz) in place of the G3220's and I think this will work... 1 Camera- 6%, 4- 17%, 9- 32%, 12- 45%, 16- 74%, 21- 93%, 24- 98%. Fairly linear depending on how much activity is being recorded. It is a little misleading since the turbo core is kicked in and running at 3.6GHz from 12 cameras up. 58deg C processor temp at 24 cameras (98%) with the ambient air temp at about 65def F. I'm a bit worried about temps when summer gets here and ambient temps are more in the mid 70's.

Great news! Thank you for the follow-up, we don't always get that kind of feedback. If you are using the Intel stock HSF you can upgrade to an aftermarket HSF and get the summer temps back down. The only problem would be if these are rack systems, other than that most of us can suggest solutions for standard PC case sizes if you aren't familiar with aftermarket cooling solutions. I'm sure there are folks here who know good solutions for rack systems as well.

Right, they are rack mounted but in 4U cases so there is room. But we have another server and storage array in the closet as well so I'll just have to monitor the temps and see what happens. If we build another 2 systems so that each monitor (12 cameras) is running on it's own system, we are at more like 50% CPU and more manageable temps.

Yes, we can adjust pretty much everything. The 5MP cameras are maxed out at 10fps and that is really what we usually record at. The biggest gain will probably be from balancing out the 1.3MP, 2MP and 5 MP cameras on the 2 systems after they are all installed. It takes much less processing power to render the 1.3MP cameras than the 5MP- Although, I think the customer is addicted to the 5MP quality now and we will probably end up with 5MP everywhere!
