CPU Running at 100% all the time. Pls help!

Hi Guys,

I can barely turn on the computer and the CPU starts running at 100% capacity. I really have not installed anything recently or made changes to the computer settings.

I see it's svchost taking all the CPU. I did run process explorer to see what services were running on that scvhost and apparently it's all the basic services that seems like I need.

I did take a screen shot but there is no way to attach it here. So I have uploaded to photobucket

Would you please take a look and recommend what to do?

Thanks so much

I think he's right - I encountered something similar to this last year on my sister-in-law's PC. I don't remember the name of the virus, though.

If this is the case, Hope you have a antivirus program as if you dont, you will be running into this problem all the time. If you have an antivirus program, run it and see if it can catch it and quarantine it.

I'd recommend to have both Antivirus and Firewall. To think of it, I may have that svchost hogging the CPU for no reason eventhough I had Antivirus and Firewall, AV didn't detect any virus, so I did a system restore. Fortunately it worked.

Hi Guys,
I have firewall and antivirus from Computer Associates, plus Windows Defender running all the time. But who know, maybe something went throught he crack. I will run the AV now.
Thanks

Could have the problem where windows update is going crazy. Try disabling automativ updates and update notification.

I ran CA AV last night and it didn't find anything. I also made sure it has been updated. I also run anti-spyware and deleted them. I will check again today.
Thanks

This is by far the most common root cause for this specific issue. I'd recomende trying this if AV / Anti SPyware scans comes up clean.

Usually you can also try booting to safe mode and see if it helps. If it does its one of the startup services / drivers / applications that starta during a normal boot. You could then proceed disabling them 5-6 at a time and then reboot and see if it helps, if not disable some more until you find the culprit.
